After curating the celebrity-loved vintage and consignment boutique Decades in Los Angeles for 15 years now, the store’s co-owner and founder Cameron Silver knows more than a thing or two about shopping vintage—he knows almost everything. And he’s putting all of that expertise into his new book Decades: A Century of Fashion ($60, Bloomsbury Publishing), which explores the history of the genre decade by decade, and the lessons vintage can teach about fashion today. “If your butt and boobs look good, nobody cares if the dress is 10 years old or 100 years old—everybody wants to look sexy,” Silver told InStyle.com of the power of vintage designs. “It’s really just about helping people look beautiful.” To achieve the special sexiness when you shop for vintage, he suggests looking for clothes that still look relevant, not costume-y, despite their age. For the best finds, hit yard sales and flea markets. “Some of the best treasures come when you get out of a metropolitan city,” he advised. “And you might find better buys!” Before your next vintage shopping adventure, check out Decades: A Century of Fashion, now available on amazon.com.
