New York Giants Victor Cruz: “Fashion Is Like Football”

Nov 6, 2012 @ 5:41 pm

You wouldn’t know it from just watching his red, white, and blue uniform zip across the AstroTurf during Sunday Night Football, but New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz calls himself a “big fashion geek.” “I talk about fashion all the time,” the Super Bowl-winning athlete told InStyle.com at last night’s ACE Awards in New York, which honored the industry’s leading accessory designers. “A lot of guys [in the locker room] say ‘Shut up about this fashion stuff.’ But I love looking good, I love feeling good in my clothes. So fashion is a big deal to me.” And his fashion cred is building as quickly as his number of pass completions—he’s pals with Calvin Klein menswear creative director Italo Zucchelli (who dressed him for the event, shown) and he sits front row during New York Fashion Week. That said, he’s quick to point out that fashion and football aren’t so different, after all. “As football players, if we look good while we’re out there, we tend to play better and feel better about ourselves when we’re on the field,” he said. “The same goes with fashion, if you look good you have more of a sense of confidence in your step and you feel good when you’re out and about. It goes hand in hand.” So, which does he prefer—Calvin Klein suits or New York Giants spandex? “It feels good every time I put on a suit on,” he said, as he touched his silk lapel. “But [spandex], that’s where the money is. If I have to put on spandex and catch a few footballs to be noticed and turn some heads a little bit, I don’t mind.”

Olivia Wilde and Julianne Moore: Calvin Klein Double Take

Nov 6, 2012 @ 5:20 pm

Whoa, fashion double-take! Julianne Moore and Olivia Wilde looked like they grabbed the same dress at last night’s ACE Awards, as both chose a winter white look with a thin black belt by Calvin Klein. There were subtle differences, of course: Moore’s strapless style included off-the-shoulder sleeves, while Wilde’s high-necked sleeveless version featured a hint of peplum. Either way, CK creative director Francisco Costa—who was there to receive the Accessories Council’s Designer of the Year award with colleagues Italo Zucchelli and Ulrich Grimm—was thrilled as he watched the ladies walk down the red carpet. “They look amazing, they really do,” Costa told InStyle.com of seeing the stars in his designs. “I love seeing women in the clothes because they really come alive. It’s amazing.” Indeed!

Black Lip Gloss: Try the Trend!

Nov 6, 2012 @ 5:19 pm

Don’t be fooled by their dark, vampy finishes—these black lip glosses are more glam than goth! Noir lip colors are typically reserved for Halloween, but we love how these sheer formulas instantly double our lipstick collection. Each gloss imparts a slight purple tint when worn alone, but when layered over lipstick, they transform your punchy neons into subdued fall hues. Swipe Urban Decay’s Perversion ($19; urbandecay.com) or Givenchy’s Celestial Black ($28; sephora.com) to turn a hot pink into a dusty mauve, or use over a too-bright orange to tone down the intensity. You can also mix the glosses with a bright red for your own custom wine lipstick. Bobbi Brown’s Black Pearl ($23; bobbibrowncosmetics.com) is a metallic plum that is transparent enough to wear alone.

“I feel like they uplift us all the time!” actress Tika Sumpter said of bags, shoes, jewelry, and all the lovely accessories that decorate her day-to-day outfits at last night’s 16th Annual Accessories Council Excellence (ACE) Awards. “Tonight, we say thank you, thank you, thank you!” And the thanks spread throughout Cipriani 42nd Street in Manhattan, as the Accessories Council honored 10 of fashion’s most influential brands and leaders. Olivia Wilde presented Vince Camuto with the Visionary Award, Tim Gunn honored Theodora and Callum founders Desiree Gruber and Stefani Greenfield with the Brand Launch of the Year Award, and Julianne Moore toasted to the Calvin Klein design team—women’s creative director Francisco Costa (pictured), men’s creative director Italo Zucchelli, and men’s and women’s shoes and accessories creative director Ulrich Grimm—with the Designer of the Year Award. (Click here to see all of the honorees.) “Accessories are so mental for women, because it really sets up the mood,” Costa told InStyle.com. “You can always tell what a woman is thinking by her shoes.” See more photos from last night’s event in the gallery, and keep clicking for additional pictures from this week’s biggest parties.

Christina Aguilera’s The Voice Beauty Inspiration: Rainbow Brite!

Nov 6, 2012 @ 4:29 pm

Last night was the first live episode of The Voice, and judge Christina Aguilera kicked things off with some major pops of color, beauty-wise. The inspiration? A popular animated ’80s TV series! “Using a candy pink lip added some fun to the sexy ‘Rainbow Brite’ look,” her makeup artist, Kristofer Buckle, told InStyle.com exclusively. “Christina had a lot of red in her hair, so I used a navy eye shadow to give her the drama she craves. It creates violet undertones, which worked well with the pink braids close to her face.” And speaking of Aguilera’s bright strands, we asked her hairstylist, Mark Townsend, what other colors to expect from the star this season. “We added strawberry highlights last night for the first live show, but Christina is an artist and likes to have fun with her hairstyles, so I can promise we will be switching it up a lot [during] the rest of the season!” Aguilera’s team will perform live on Wednesday, so she was able to relax last night and watch the performances from Team Blake and Team Adam. What did you think of Christina’s bold beauty look? Tell us in the comments below!

Olivia Wilde Gives Boyfriend Jason Sudeikis a Lesson in Lipstick

Nov 6, 2012 @ 3:53 pm

Olivia Wilde faces a problem so many women do—to kiss or not to kiss with lipstick on? As the face of Revlon, sacrificing pretty lip colors for first base with boyfriend Jason Sudeikis doesn’t come easy. “Revlon makes these crayons, they’re great and they stay on all day,” the actress told InStyle.com at last night’s Accessories Council Excellence Awards Gala in New York City, referring to Revlon’s Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain (shop it for $9 at drugstores). “I tend to wear this light pink one and my boyfriend avoids kissing me when I’m wearing it because it inevitably gives him a pink upper lip,” she joked. “But the color really sticks. Some colors only last 15 minutes and you’re done, but with these crayons, it lasts. It’s great.” So, save your kisses, Jason!
