When wearing a sequined dress like Kerry Washington, we’re often left wondering how much sparkle is too much, especially in the beauty department. Since the holidays are around the corner, you can get away with wearing a little extra glitter this time of the year, just do so in moderation. Metallic shadows can wash you out, so make like Washington and define your lashes with a generous sweep of mascara to ground the look. The star’s makeup artist Carola Gonzalez drew inspiration from her outfit, mirroring her dress’s soft lavender tones on her lids. After adding a dramatic sweep of liner, Gonzalez finished with a few coats of Dior’s Diorshow Black Out Mascara ($25; nordstrom.com), which uses kohl pigments in the formula for a smoldering effect.

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge not only marries in McQueen, she plays field hockey in it, too! The royal wore a navy-and-green tartan print coat by Alexander McQueen (just one of her many great toppers) to visit St. Andrews, her old boarding school in Pangbourne, England today. We love her choice of tartan (the same pattern is on different items at alexandermcqueen.com), as it was a nice nod to the time when she had to wear school uniforms. And it wasn’t just her outfit that put Catherine in a nostalgic mood. She took to the school’s grassy knoll to play some field hockey—in black calf-high suede boots, no less!

The Girls are back! HBO’s critically acclaimed show returns for a second season January 13th, and from the looks of the just released trailer (watch above!) we’re in for another round of great adventures from the mind of writer, director, and star, Lena Dunham. Last season ended with Hannah (Dunham) sitting dejectedly on the beach in Coney Island, Marnie (Allison Williams) moving into Shoshanna’s (Zosia Mamet) apartment, and Jessa (Jemima Kirke) married. With their lives at crossroads, we can’t wait to see how the Girls will cope with the uncertainties of their twenties. “You should look around yourself right now Hannah, life is never going to get any better than this for you,” Jessa advises in the trailer. Watch the trailer above for a sneak peek, and be sure to tune in Sundays at 9pm on HBO starting January 13th to see how life shakes out for this quirky crew.
