Banana Republic’s Anna Karenina Collection: Exclusive First Look!

Before Anna Karenina—starring Keira Knightley and Jude Law—hits theaters on November 16, die-hard fans of the classic novel can surround themselves with regal (and festive) Russian fare! Banana Republic (who is quite fond of entertainment-driven collections, given the retailer’s ongoing Mad Men collaboration) is giving InStyle.com an exclusive sneak peek of the limited-edition Anna Karenina capsule collection, which was inspired by the film’s 19th-century fashion and styled and curated by its costume designer, Jacqueline Durran. “It’s really about taking key elements of that time period—sophisticated color, fabrics, and beautiful detailing—and translating that into an updated wardrobe,” Simon Kneen, Banana Republic’s Creative Director and Executive Vice President of Design told InStyle.com. “Small touches such as lace and fur embellishments portray a classic sense of luxury without requiring a full look that may feel ‘costumey.’ Even if incorporating vintage pieces, you shouldn’t don a full 19th-century look. Instead, mix and match with more modern pieces to keep it current.” The men’s and women’s offerings—check out the original sketches by Kneen and Durran above—include apparel, ranging in price from $59 to $500, as well as shoes and accessories that will retail from $29 to $225. The Anna Karenina collection hits Banana Republic stores and bananarepublic.com on Tuesday, October 30. In the meantime, click through the gallery below to see all the looks!

Leslie Mann’s Fashion Advice for Judd Apatow: “Stop Wearing the Same Shirt from 17 Years Ago!”

Oct 23, 2012 @ 2:36 pm

Knocked Up director, Girls executive producer, and all-around comedic genius Judd Apatow dominated last night’s Hollywood Film Awards in Los Angeles with his quick-witted quips, scribbling down zingers and one-liners on a program before taking the stage to accept the Hollywood Comedy Award. He proved his worth by roasting a number of famous faces in the crowd (most material is not suitable for print!), all while donning a sleek suit by Ermenegildo Zegna. He talked to InStyle.com about his big screen reunion with hilarious actress/wife Leslie Mann in the upcoming film This is 40, due out December 21. “We always have fun together because when we make movies it’s the only time I’m allowed to truly tell her what to do,” Apatow told InStyle.com. “And that only works a quarter of the time on the set.” And when it comes to his clothing? “She’ll say to me, ‘Judd, please! Stop wearing that same shirt from when I met you 17 years ago!‘” he told us. “That’s her main fashion advice.” Whatever the couple’s style strategy, it’s working—they looked fabulous on the Emmys red carpet (above), where Mann chose a vivid yellow Naeem Khan gown!

Ashley Greene’s Red Hair: Her Colorist Shares the Details

Oct 23, 2012 @ 1:36 pm

Ashley Greene made a head-turning statement when she stepped out with newly red hair over the weekend. We caught up with her colorist, Jason Backe, who works at the Ted Gibson Salon, to get the details on the star’s new hue. “Ashley is a great client because every time she colors her hair she wants to do something different,” he told InStyle.com. “When she said she wanted to go red, she was specific in requesting a color that made a bold statement, that didn’t necessarily look natural, and had no orange tones.” Ready to go red? Backe recommends keeping your skin tone in mind before taking the plunge. Those with pale complexions, like Greene’s, should opt for a similar color to the actress’—a cool-toned red with no hint of orange. “For people who tan easily, have olive undertones, or have a dark complexion, true reds or violet-reds are great options,” he advised. “The end result is a traffic-stopping color that has everybody talking.” You can say that again!

Oct 23, 2012 @ 1:25 pm

Kerry Washington worked some new nail art at the Hollywood Film Awards Gala in Los Angeles last night, accenting her Monique Lhuillier dress with a half-moon manicure in a nude-noir combo. “These are actually from a photo shoot I did yesterday with my Django co-stars Jamie Foxx and Leonardo DiCaprio,” she told InStyle.com. “I funked it up a little bit. I added the half moon!” Washington’s manicurist Elle, who has worked with Blake Lively and Charlize Theron, created the chic design, and it’s easy to try your hand at the pattern. Just use two of your favorite lacquers and some French tip sticker guides to create the crisp, rounded lines.

Narciso Rodriguez for Kohl’s DesigNation lands in stores in a few weeks, and we can hardly wait! Neither can the Cuban-American designer’s loyal celebrity fans, including Julianna Margulies, Katie Holmes, and Emma Roberts, who all celebrated his new lineup in New York last night. “I love that he loves women,” Margulies told InStyle.com of why she’s a Narciso follower (he even made her wedding dress!), while wearing the $64 two-tone dress from the collection. “He respects us and he cuts dresses to looks best on a woman’s body. He loves a curve. And this dress? It’s just not going to go out of style.” Rodriguez is thrilled that his pals took to his creations, like Emma Roberts, who wore the collection’s $60 V-neck design. “When you see women who have such great style that look so beautiful, it makes me very proud,” he told us. “I approached designing this collection the same way I would approach my own collection. I love beautiful things, and there wasn’t any holding back on style or design. My objective was to create a beautiful collection.” Click through the gallery to preview the entire Narciso Rodriquez for Kohl’s DesigNation—which was inspired by his recent trip to Istanbul and is full of the clean lines and architectural inspirations he’s known for—and shop it when it lands in Kohl’s stores and kohls.com starting November 7th.
