New: Hand-Woven Shoes by Painted Bird

Oct 13, 2012 @ 6:00 pm

Fashion industry vets Jennifer Samson and Nicole Halpern just launched their cloth shoe company Painted Bird  a few months ago, and the styles have already been scooped up by Blake LivelyReese Witherspoon, and Kate Hudson. “The name came from the idea of beautiful pieces of art for your feet that make you feel like you can take flight and be anywhere,” Samson told InStyle.com. And each pair is special—the colors are hand-dyed and the shoes nylon silk thread is hand-woven by a group of eight women in India. “We love the fact that they are handmade, and we want to keep the integrity of that.” Take a peek at their new fall styles—ankle strap and basic flats—at shoppaintedbird.com, and shop them for $78 each.

Manicure to Try: Deep Blue and Gold Flakes

Oct 13, 2012 @ 4:30 pm

Inspired by the gorgeous marriage of blue and gold in a lapis lazuli gemstone,
this bold pattern is more sophisticated than leopard—but no less daring. Get the look in three easy steps.

STEP 1 Apply two coats of a deep
navy blue. Try MAC Cosmetics Nail Lacquer in Spirit of Truth ($16; maccosmetics.com). Allow to dry for 10 minutes so you won’t leave any imprints when working with the foils.

STEP 2 Dip a toothpick into a topcoat, then use the end to attach a gold flake. We like to us Art Club by
Color Club Gold Foil Flakes ($5; shopcolorclub.com). Place it down, and carefully flatten
the edges with your fingertip. Repeat
using smaller and larger pieces to
 create a varied design.

STEP 3 Add topcoat to seal.

Beauty Meets Art: Collaborations to Know

Oct 13, 2012 @ 3:00 pm

Kiehl’s partnered with New York-based pop artist Kenny Scharf to create the fourth annual limited-edition Creme de Corps Collection. Like Kiehl’s previous collaborations—Jeff Koons did last year’s set—100% of profits will support children’s charities around the world (shop it for $29 to $75 at kiehls.com). And Kiehl’s isn’t the only one tapping visionaries. Other beauty brands have called on influential artists to produce contemporary art-inspired products and packaging. See the gallery of our favorite collaborations.
