The dress caused a fashion frenzy upon its debut, and InStyle editor-at-large Hal Rubenstein counts it as his favorite dress of all time. He describes it in his book 100 Unforgettable Dresses as “devilishly engineered,” with a “ravine-deep neckline, thigh-high slit, double-fastened straps, and open rib cage, secured by a half dozen pronged Medusas.” Versace himself denied that Hurley even had a fitting for the dress, that he just “knew [she] would look simply bellissima, perfetto.” We think Gianni, who died in 1998, would have been gaga for the update.
