5 Shades of Grey Seen at Emmys 2012

In a year when every woman on Earth (and their mothers) read E.L. James’s Fifty Shades of Grey, the color now associated with BDSM-obsessed fictional Seattle businessman Christian Grey made a strong showing at the 64th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. American Horror Story’s Connie Britton sparkled from head to toe in an ashy Andrew Gn halter dress, Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland co-designed her beaded dove Notte by Marchesa look, Homeland’s Morena Baccarin chose a deep-plunging Basil Soda slate design, Mad Men bombshell Christina Hendricks worked a silver curve-hugging Christian Siriano mermaid gown, and Revenge’s Emily VanCamp chose a foggy J. Mendel gown (one of a number of stars who donned a Gilles creation). Looks like everyone has a little Anastasia Steele in them—or at least the love of something grey!

Emmys 2012: Sofia Vergara’s Makeup Must-Have

Sep 23, 2012 @ 10:58 pm

Who wouldn’t want to hang out with Sofia Vergara? We’ve got the next best thing—all the details about her pampering party before the 2012 Emmy AwardsMakeup artist Kayleen McAdams gave InStyle.com the exclusive inside scoop, including the inspiration for the Modern Family star’s look: “Caramel! Her eyes, cheeks, lips and skin were all different shades of warm browns and played against the dress [a teal beaded Zuhair Murad].” McAdams also said the Best Supporting Actress nominee and CoverGirl spokesperson is very involved in the primping process: “The one item she could never live without is mascara!” In turn, McAdams applied three coats of CoverGirl LashBlast Volume Mascara on both the top and bottom lashes to lengthen and add volume ($7 at covergirl.com). She also said the vibe in the room could be described as “LOUD!” “Sofia had all her family members with her so everyone was running around, getting ready and chatting,” McAdams told us, adding that they indulged in Fonuts and macarons. What a blast!

Lena DunhamAllison Williams, and Zosia Mamet had a big night to get primped for—their runaway HBO hit, Girls, earned the Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy Award nomination! Williams opted for a green silk peplum Oscar de la Renta gown (sticking with the green theme), while Dunham wore a lace Prada dress. Meanwhile, Mamet chose her Bibhu Mohapatra two-tone design at the last minute. “It was a dark horse,” she told InStyle.com. “I’m super-excited to be wearing it. It was pretty down to the wire, but this one came through. It’s really hard to find a dress! It’s not easy. The second I put this on I just knew it was the one.” Hopefully the Girls girls take home statues next year!

Not only did Amy Poehler and Melissa McCarthy both earn Emmy nominations in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series category, they also both got styling advice from their kids! “This is a $2 ring from my child,” the Parks and Recreation star said on the red carpet. “He told me to wear it, so I did!” Meanwhile, McCarthy also wore a sparkling pink ring on directive from her daughters Vivian and Georgette. Emmys 2012: What J. Mendel Thinks of Dressing All Those Ladies

What did Jena Malone, Kat Dennings, Emily VanCamp, Jennifer Westfeldt all have in common at the 2012 Emmys? Dresses by J. Mendels Gilles Mendel! “I put a lot of love and effort into those dresses,” the designer told InStyle.com just days before Emmys night during his New York Fashion Week show. “I would hope that they’re effortless and that the woman feels feminine. I love the woman’s body. They work hard at making them beautiful.” And his hope is that all of the women who chose his pieces—including Malone’s merlot satin asymmetrical look, Dennings’s sweetheart red-hot crimson column, VanCamp’s dove gray pleated style, and Westfeldt’s royal blue draped design—feel great about wearing them. “I think they feel confident in the dresses,” he said. “They understand the work that is put into them.”

Emmys 2012: Behind the Scenes with Downton Abbey’s Lady Mary Crawley

Sep 23, 2012 @ 9:49 pm

Nominated for a Best Actress in a Drama Series EmmyDownton Abbey’s Michelle Dockery (who plays Lady Mary Crawley) called upon CHANEL celebrity makeup artist Jordan Bree Long to create her simple dewy complexion and a serious statement lip to go with her Louis Vuitton gown. “For Michelle’s eyes we wanted to keep it light and soft with just a hint of sparkle with fluttery lashes,” Long told InStyle.com exclusively. She used Chanel Illusion D’Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow in Abstraction, a chic rose gold all over her lid (available for $36 on chanel.com in November). Next, Long contoured using the taupe-gray shadow and then added a pop of metallic at the center of her lid. For her bold brick red lip, Long first lined Dockery’s lips with pencil, then layered Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Luminous Matte Lip Colour in La Somptueuse ($32.50 at chanel.com). “We wanted to do a deeper lip but nothing too dark and vampy,” Long said. “This color perfectly complements her hair and also looks fantastic with Michelle’s fair flawless skin.” We couldn’t agree more.

Sofia Vergara’s Emmys 2012 Jewelry: More Than 175 Carats of Diamonds!

Sep 23, 2012 @ 9:46 pm

While many stars shined bright at the 64th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, our biggest “wow” moment came when we saw the super-sized diamonds Modern Family star Sofia Vergara paired with her green beaded mermaid-style Zuhair Murad gown and Nancy Gonzalez handbag. The jewelry, courtesy of Neil Lane, weighs in at more than 175 carats: Vergara’s pear-shaped drop earrings are 45 carats, the marquise cut diamond and platinum bracelet come to 25 carats, a ring with two center stones is 20 carats, her serpent bracelet, 10 carats, and—here’s the keystone piece—a whopping 75-carat cuff bracelet. That’s a lot of ice—enough to keep the actress cool in the 90-degree Los Angeles heat! Get all the details on her jewels in the gallery.

The 64th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards red carpet featured a lot of green! Julianna Margulies wore a garden-inspired floral gown by Giambattista Valli, Heidi Klum stepped out in a seafoam Alexandre Vauthier dress, which she said she picked for three simple reasons: “I love the color. I love the cut. I love the high slit.” InStyle Makeover cover girl Julianne Hough chose a beaded Georges Hobeika mermaid style that matched her eyes, while Sofia Vergara went with a brighter hue in a beaded Zuhair Murad embroidered design. Nicole Kidman also got in on the trend, walking the carpet in an Antonio Berardi dress with teal beading. Seems like it is easy being green!
