Nail Art: Serena Williams’s Floral Manicure at Wimbledon

Jul 10, 2012 @ 4:30 pm

Ever the manicure enthusiast, Serena Williams is always serving up fun nail art, and her talons at Wimbledon were no exception! The tennis star, who previously created her own lacquers with OPI, opted for a nude manicure with floral detail on her ring finger. We love how the design looks intricate, but is surprisingly easy to recreate. All you need are two nail polishes with ultra-fine brushes, like Orly’s Instant Artist lacquers ($5 each; orlybeauty.com). Make like Williams and paint a red and white pattern over a tawny base, or jump on the neon trend with high-impact hues like hot pink, or bold yellow. Since the nail art is concentrated on just one finger, you can play with different colors and patterns without having the overall effect appear busy. Now that’s a winning manicure!

The Secret to Krysten Ritter’s Perfect Bangs

Jul 10, 2012 @ 3:50 pm

We love Krysten Ritter‘s short bangs, but sporting a similar cut in the summer humidity often seems like a pipe dream. That’s why we caught up with the actress to find out the secret to her pitch-perfect style. “I came out of the womb with bangs! I’m like a professional,” the fringe veteran joked. “Even if you don’t blow-dry the rest of your hair, you have to blow-dry your bangs, and you need a really good brush. I use a vent brush.” Our favorite option? Goody’s Vented Gel Brush ($7; target.com). The cushioned grip makes for a more comfortable blowout, and the ionic bristles keep frizz at bay.

Chanel’s Nail Art from Couture Fashion Week: All The Details!

Jul 10, 2012 @ 2:05 pm

Chanel has nailed it again! At the label’s Fall Couture Show in Paris, models hit the runway in some seriously covetable nail art. Peter Philips, Chanel’s creative director of makeup, used the Le Vernis in May ($26; chanel.com) all over the nail, then traced the edges with a shimmery pewter lacquer. While the crisp, clean lines look hard to recreate, you can try out this manicure at home with just a few strips of tape! Start with two coats of a shimmery silver lacquer, and once it is dry, apply tape along the bottom and sides of your nail to square off the edges. After the tape is in place, layer on two generous coats of May to fill in the center of your nail bed. Let your mani dry completely before applying or removing the tape. Wet nail polish sticks to the tape, and will end up getting pulled off. Finish with a shiny top coat, and you’re good to go!

How To Dress Around Animal-Prints

Jul 10, 2012 @ 2:00 pm

The trick to pulling off animal prints is paying attention to the fabric and cut of the dress, says stylist Penny Lovell, who chose a silk and cotton Dolce & Gabbana sheath for actress Rose Byrne. “The key here is the demure neckline and 3/4 length sleeves, plus a material that isn’t shiny.” Going this route adds a refined feel to a bold fashion statement. Finish with understated extras like a thin belt and platform pumps for a just-sexy-enough date-night look.
