Madonna’s MDNA tour is well underway, with the pop icon touching down for 86 shows in modernized cone bras, custom couture bandage dresses, and her signature fishnet stockings. And it’s all thanks to costume designer Arianne Phillips, who concocted the wardrobe as the latest project in their 15 year-collaboration, which has spanned album covers, West End plays, the Super Bowl, and designing for the Madonna-directed film W.E. “One of the greatest things about Madonna is that she’s so prolific and I’ve worked with her in many different disciplines,” Phillips told InStyle.com at the preview of Persol Magnificent Obsessions: 30 Stories of Craftsmanship in Film exhibit at Museum of the Moving Image in New York, where her Oscar-nominated costumes from W.E. went on display. “Whether it’s her attention to detail as a director in W.E. or her own work as a performer on a tour, there’s no difference, it’s the same process,” added the designer, who worked for three months to prepare the MDNA looks. “It’s the same attention to detail, and it’s the same obsessive quality of fleshing it out until it gets to the right place.” After kicking off the tour in May in Asia, Madonna headed to Europe, will return to North America in August, and finish up in South America in November. “She’s amazing, she is a visionary and an icon,” said Phillips.
