Trend to Try: Halo Braid Headbands

May 22, 2012 @ 5:45 pm

Hollywood is having a Heidi moment with stars like Lea Michele, Sarah Gadon, and Alicia Keys opting for braided updos. “This style looks great from every angle, and exudes a fun and youthful vibe,” said hairstylist Marcus Francis, who created Gadon’s halo-plait look for the Cannes Film Festival. To try the look yourself, Francis recommends prepping hair with a volumizer (he loves Phyto Volume Actif, $35; sephora.com) to build up thickness, then adding a spritz of texturizer to keep the braid from slipping. Amp up the style and add lift by loosening the front twist with a tail comb before securing with hair pins. “This creates a slightly more dressy version to the headband braid because of the height,” Francis added. Tell us: Would you try this look?

Glee Finale: Where to Find Lea Michele’s Apple Necklace

May 22, 2012 @ 5:25 pm

On tonight’s Glee finale, Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) wears a tiny red apple pendant to celebrate her move to New York City—and the design was all Michele’s idea! “Since Rachel’s obsession is to get to New York to start her career, Lea thought why not have her wear a little apple necklace for The Big Apple,” Glee costume designer Lou Eyrich told InStyle.com. The red enamel pendant was custom-designed by Ryan Ryan Jewelry, the same company that created the starFinn, and “R” pendants that Rachel has worn on the show. The necklace is available for $215 to $299 on mcssl.com in variations of white, rose and yellow gold with red or white enamel. Watch the finale tonight at 9/8c on FOX.

Found It! Elizabeth Banks’s Hot Pink Lipstick

May 22, 2012 @ 5:00 pm

Elizabeth Banks defied the don’t-match-your-lipstick-to-your-dress rule at the New York City premiere of What to Expect When You’re Expecting—and we loved it! “This is a case where matching a lip to a dress actually works because it ties the whole look together,” her makeup artist Gita Bass told InStyle.com exclusively. Bass used Make Up For Ever’s Rouge Artiste Natural in Soft Fuchsia, a sheer, ultra-hydrating lipstick that can be layered for maximum impact to play up the punchy pink detail of her Peter Pilotto design. “I was so inspired by the gorgeous beaded flowers on Elizabeth’s dress and wanted to transform her into a glamorous spring goddess,” Bass added. Pick up your own tube for $19 at sephora.com.

Oscar de la Renta’s New Garden-Inspired Collection: Our Favorite Looks

May 22, 2012 @ 4:15 pm

Color lit up the runway at Oscar de la Renta’s resort 2013 fashion show, held at his New York studio yesterday. Inspired by the garden, flowers—both printed and embroidered—embellished the designs, which came in bright hues like evergreen, pacific, and carnation. The theme extended beyond florals, with pretty watercolors, picnic gingham, and plant-like prints. The final evening looks added Hollywood glamour to the sophisticated lineup and ensured an Oscar de la Renta dress for every occasion, from a red carpet to a getaway. Click through the gallery to see our favorite looks from the fashion show.

The Bachelorette Exclusive: Emily Maynard’s Favorite Outfits

May 22, 2012 @ 3:25 pm

We’re asking Emily Maynard about her favorite outfit from each episode of The Bachelorette this season, and her pick for Episode 2 is this rose-colored chiffon gowna look worth $14,500.  ”I can’t even put into words how much I love the Jean Fares Couture gown I wore on my date with Joe at The Greenbriar,” she told InStyle.com exclusively. “This dress has so many unexpected details, from the jewels going down the front to the etched leather belt, that I never wanted to take it off. I like to think it’s a little bit country and a little rock and roll, kind of like me!” As much as Maynard loved the dress, bachelor Joe wasn’t as lucky—he didn’t receive a rose and was sent packing at the end of the date. Tell us: Who are you rooting for? And what did you think of Emily’s dress?
