A new episode of Mad Men premiered last night, and we caught up with the show’s costume designer Janie Bryant to get the inside scoop on the fabulous retro fashions, including the looks worn by Megan Draper (Jessica Pare) and Betty Francis (January Jones) during their meeting. “The costumes in that scene were really important to tell the story of these two different women and where their lives are now,” Bryant told us. “We have Megan, who is the new wife, the young wife, the modern wife. She’s very much in touch with what’s going on in fashion in contrast to Betty, who is more uptight and conservative.” Click through for Bryant’s take on more of last night’s looks, and catch the next episode of Mad Men Sunday, May 20th at 9/8c on AMC.

I really did love how the two looks were done. Betty is classic, and trying so hard to hold on to her pride, while Megan, I think, finds it easy to be herself and play with fashion. Both are beautiful, shame they can’t mix.

The different looks are perfect. But Betty still looks way too young! She looks younger than Megan!

I love Megan’s style and attitude and I think Betty is jealous. Betty traded looks for financial security a long time ago!
