DWTS Season 14: Karina Smirnoff’s Outfit Inspired by Bed Sheets

Apr 3, 2012 @ 12:25 pm

Karina Smirnoff designed the outfits she and partner Gavin DeGraw wore on last night’s Dancing with the Stars, and pulled her inspiration from a mix of piano seduction and bed accessories. “The outfit is a glam version of an undergarment body suit wrapped in a silky bed sheet,” Smirnoff told InStyle.com of their style for their rumba to Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind.” “The story is a couple comes home after a night on the town. The man is dressed in a tux, but takes his jacket off and stays in a white tux shirt—sleeves rolled up—and plays piano for his lady, while she sits on the piano, listening and admiring him.” The pair received a 24 out of 30 for the routine, which he dedicated to his family for supporting his dream of becoming a musician. Watch their performance above.

Try It Now: Red Nail Polish With a Blue Dress

Apr 3, 2012 @ 11:45 am

What’s a good nail polish color to go with a blue dress? Take a cue from Kristen Stewart’s Kid’s Choice Awards look and try bright red. “I wanted to play off of the blue in her dress with a bright lacquer,” her manicurist Ashlie Johnson said of the Twilight star’s color choice, Chanel’s Rouge Carat ($26 at chanel.com). When using bold colors like this, Johnson recommends sealing the free edge of the nail with a horizontal swipe of polish. “This helps the color stay on longer and gives off a more finished appearance,” she said.

Found It! Katniss Everdeen’s Brown Boots From The Hunger Games

Apr 3, 2012 @ 10:45 am

The Hunger Games has earned $251 million at the box office so far, which means millions of eyes have caught sight of the brown lace-up boots Jennifer Lawrences character Katniss Everdeen wears in the film. The outdoorsy pair is a design by Frye; find them for $398 at thefryecompany.com. Frye is actually really good at getting movie time for its boots, too—last year, the company outfitted Julianne Hough with red boots for her dance-heavy role in Footloose.

Emmy Rossum Is InStyle Hair‘s New Cover Girl!

Apr 3, 2012 @ 8:30 am
Hair Issue InStyle 2012John Akehurst

Emmy Rossum is the cover girl for this year’s InStyle Hair! The Shameless star turned on the glam for our annual issue, working a series of ultra-cool looks (like this braided Grecian updo) courtesy of star stylist Peter Gray. In her private life however, the 25-year-old is a do-it-yourself kind of gal—not only for beauty, but also for fashion. “I surf the Web to see the runway shows and then figure out who the fashion publicists are and e-mail them myself,” she said of styling herself—no third-party assistance required—something pretty much unheard of in Hollywood. To be safe, she takes pictures of herself to make sure she looks OK before she goes out. Though, missteps happen, like the time she studded her eyes with Swarovski crystals. “Anytime you Google ‘bad celebrity makeup,’ that comes up,” she said. “I looked as if a tranny clown pooped on my eyes! But I think it’s good to take chances.” That kind of brave attitude was the perfect canvas for the InStyle Hair issue—see her model creative hairstyles and read more of our exclusive interview with the actress when the issue hits newsstands Friday.
