There was a major oil spill off the coast of New Zealand last week, and natural wildlife is in danger as a result. To save the lives of many Little Blue Penguins affected, New Zealanders have been knitting tiny sweaters for their protection. The mini knitwear prevents them from preening and swallowing the toxic oil on their feathers, and keeps them warm while they wait their turns to be cleaned. A call put out by Grist.org earlier this week asked knitters to send in penguin-sized sweaters and provided patterns—and they’ve already exceeded their goal! As if these little guys didn’t already make us feel warm and fuzzy.
