Duchess Catherine and Pippa Middleton are fans of nude pantyhose, and thanks to the sisters, sales of the hosiery have spiked! We asked Project Runway mentor Tim Gunn to weigh in on the look. “I’m not  fan of the nude stockings,” Gunn told InStyle exclusively. “I think it’s a British royal family thing. I think there are few things that look as anachronistic as a sheer stocking. If you’re wearing stockings it should be known!” Despite his dislike of sheer tights, he admires Duchess Catherine’s style. “I have great respect for how she presents herself to the world,” Gunn said. “She wears something and it blows off the shelves. She understands silhouette, proportion and fit.” Where do you stand on nude stockings? Let us know in our poll!

PLUS! Look back at all of Duchess Catherine’s North American tour outfits in the gallery.

It may not be your thing, but I think for most men, they love to see women in hosiery. I love to see that slight shine on the legs and love that silky feel on women’s legs. All shades of nude, tan, whatever. Open toe, close toe. There’s something for everyone.
You can look at poorly dressed ladies, if you like. Good for you. The rest of us will admire the elegance of those with hosiery.

I’m not a fan of nude hose. I think they look great on Duchess Katherine and her sister Pippa, but I wouldn’t wear them.

-Inga on August 1st, 2011

I think more women should wear this look because it’s classy and elegant. People have gotten so lax with the way they present themselves to the world. I see people walking around in pajama pants, this is definitely a breath of fresh air.

-Rhea on August 1st, 2011

Let’s hear it for hosiery. If you want to be impeccably dressed, it finishes the look. I love nude stockings and I wear them when I have an important event. Bare legs are for the unsophisticated and children.

-Lady D on August 1st, 2011

it think the stockings most likely provide Kate with a much-needed extra layer of body fat. she may “understand silhouette, proportion and fit,” but not quite sure she understands “healthy body.” maybe she should ask Pippa.

Tim is usually so right on, but not this time…no way. Princess Kate is showing both class and style. In my professional opinion as a wardrobe consultant and stylist, nude sheer stockings are a must for the office and for dressy occasions. They are indeed stylish and fashionable. Best brand I’ve found? Donna Karan’s “The Nudes”.

-nancy pipal on August 8th, 2011

Nonsense – nude stockings/tights look great on both of these examples. What does Tim Gunn think they should be wearing?? Can’t just slate a look and not offer an alternative. There are many countries in the world where women can’t sustain a 52-week tan, and even then most legs ought to have a certain amount of coverup which is offered by tights and stockings. Not everyone can pamper themselves and remove every sign of thread-veins and the like. Way to go Kate and Pippa!

I can’t believe this guy is paid for his opinion. This is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. I guess natural is out according to this guy. Sorry, but natural is the forever fashion and that flashy, spotted, or whatever trash he likes is trendy for a reason. Cuz it sucks.

-becky on December 2nd, 2011

Oh, Please….Give it a rest….she’s gorgeous – just leave it at that.,,, you’re grasping at straws.

-Emily Drummond on December 2nd, 2011

SHEER AND NUDE STOCKINGS , IF FOR NO OTHER REASON MAKE A PERSON APPEAR SLEEK AND TIDY. TO SOME STOCKINGS ON WOMEN ARE AS EFFECTIVE AS WELL DONE VENEERS ON TEETH….. MR. GUNN, MEN WHO APPRECIATE THE APPEARANCE OF A WELL GROOMED WOMAN – BEG TO DIFFER.

-MDBOTIS on December 2nd, 2011

I agree with Sean. I am a woman and I wear them. My husband loves to see woman in stockings (what man don’t) but unfortunately they aren’t around as much.

-Debbie on December 2nd, 2011

I think the sheer hose make her look very hot.

-verbatim on December 2nd, 2011

To quote Mr. Dunn: “If you’re wearing stockings it should be known.” Gracious me, a lady has to keep some secrets my dear man, thank you very much.

-Susan on December 2nd, 2011

Speaking of 2011 trends we could do without–Tim Gunn gets my vote. All of these fashion dictators can go fish, as far as I’m concerned. Most straight men like the look of stockings or pantyhose on women, in my experience; but let’s leave it up to the wearer–if Tim doesn’t like wearing them, we won’t force him!, ok?

-Barbara Winslow on December 2nd, 2011

I am glad Kate is wearing stockings – she should in my opinion. I love nearly all the comments posted here -they are written by people who understand that bare legs give an unpolished, unfinished look. Tim Gunn knows vey little.

-mld20 on December 2nd, 2011

The sheer is what makes it sexy especially if have the legs to show them off. I am a woman and I always wear sheer.
By the way my husband loves sheer on me.

-Barbara on December 2nd, 2011

Nude stockings are anachronistic, Tim? How old is the print shirt with a white collar? I believe that goes back to the days of removable collars.

-Mary on December 2nd, 2011

oh please Tim Gunn! I love him on Project Runway but really, how many outfits does he ever wear that bare his legs to the world? He had a makeover show and he was also forever telling women to wear skirts and dresses that ended at the knee saying it was the most flattering length. Now seriously, put your money where your mouth is. Tim Gunn’s best known for wearing a suit. Show us your own bare legs every day before you tell women to do it.

-Ruth on December 2nd, 2011

Although I have great respect for Tim Gunn’s fashion sense on this point I just cannot agree. Nude hose were made to give a slimming uniform look to the legs, buttocks and lower abdomen, and at the same time hide minor imperfections. The majority of women do not “Fashion Model” figures, yet they embrace the latest fashion trends, whether they are appropriate for them or not. In my opinion, the trend of going bare legged is one of the worst fashion missteps to ever come around.

-Maureen on December 3rd, 2011

Everyone is certainly entitled to an opinion and it is certainly sad when class is ignored. Yes, it is my opinion!

-arogers on December 3rd, 2011

Tim, I love you, but I HATE the recent years and how they have ruined the concept of what lingerie really was meant for. It is meant to conceal, unless it’s time not to.

In the case of hose, thank God hoes are back. I am sick to death of bare legs. Tim, have you ever smelled the shoe of a non-hose-wearing chippy? Ick.

Nope. I will channel my inner Liz for this one.

-darlean on December 3rd, 2011

here here I wholeheartedly agree the female leg looks so much sexier in hose, like someone said gives a finished look, love the feel in a good way smooths conceals, turns men on. myself included.

-A.C. on December 3rd, 2011

I’m just glad to see something on women’s legs! That whole bare-leg look only looked good on very few women. Ladies, look at your legs to see if they REALLY look good enough not to have a little help! Also, check your butt because pantyhose makes your rear end look better too. Finally, thank you, Kate, for making me stylish again!

-Lisa on December 3rd, 2011

For a guy who dresses well, I’m surprised with his comments about stockings. I’m a straight man and I give Tim kudos for always dressing sharply and encouraging people to dress better. Yet I think he’s off-the-mark when it comes to hosiery on ladies.

People like him and those two from “What Not To Wear” have given the false impression that hosiery is old fashioned or silly. Nothing can be further from the truth. I’d rather see a young woman in hosiery than a granny! Kate is young and beautiful and she looks great in hosiery. She makes hosiery look the way it’s supposed to look: an enhancement of a lady’s legs.

Hosiery adds elegance, class, and a sense of sexiness to a lady’s legs. They always have.

It wasn’t that long ago when ladies wore hosiery a lot of the time, even when going out at night. I think it looks odd when I see ladies in a business environment or evening event wearing nice dresses or suits, high heels, have their makeup and hair done nicely, and then have bare legs. That’s like a guy wearing a suit or nice slacks without a belt, no socks (and wearing open toed sandals), and hasn’t shaven his face. Whatever happened to taking pride in looking presentable?

I’ve been around long enough to remember ladies, and yes, even young ones in their late-teens (when I was in high school) to 30s, wearing hosiery. It wasn’t something “for grannies.” It wasn’t something that only women over the age of 50 wore. It was something that “completed the outfit.” The people who seemed to complain about a woman wearing hosiery were the ones who hated dressing up. What’s wrong with looking good?

Like makeup, hosiery can make a lady’s legs look very nice. Hosiery makes an outfit look put together. It’s nice to see some class coming back.

-moviebluedog on December 3rd, 2011

HMMM The people have spoken!!! At the time of writing this comment there were 23 previous comments that all were 100% for the wearing of pantyhose by ladies that really wanted to look classy, sexy, well dressed,or what ever you call it.Make that 24 with me. I absolutely adore the look, feel and reactions that a lady gets when she is wearing a pair and is proud of showing off the beauty that God gave her. Bare legs are for the beach. Whether it’s a formal evening out or with a pair of Daisy Duke shorts. Pantyhose do really enhance legs, support & massage. and make you look damn sexy. I think the main reason that some women hate pantyhose is that they wear the wrong size or style for themselves. When you get the right size and style. It isa wonderful sensation, and so comfortable to wear, that you never want to take them off. For starters don’t ever buy hose that are 100% nylon. They have no support, they bag horribly, and you’re lucky if they stay up at all. Get them with some percentage of lycra or spandex.

-Jaime on December 4th, 2011

Dear Tim,

You are a man and I would not expect you to understand these things. Maybe it hasn’t registered it your pretentious little mind, that some women wear them to cover up certain unwanted marks on their legs, or give a little extra colour to a pale leg and that in fact it may make them feel more confident about themselves. Yes there are a few women out there who by the wrong shade for their skin tone, but don’t knock the rest of us you like them & look good in them. Also with your comment that “If you’re wearing stockings it should be known.” Would a pair of nightshade stocking look good during the day with a summer dress? No I don’t think so…nude colour are most useful and sometime you have enough going on with your outfit that you don’t want a patterned stocking or solid colour.

-Cindy on December 6th, 2011

I think high quality nude stockings look nice, but the problem is not many ladies, especially in my age group of 20s and early 30s, wear them. I wouldn’t want to be “square”, but I will say…they do make your legs look better and help hide veins and flaws. So why wouldn’t more women wear them?
