Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge and Pippa Middleton are fans of the nude pantyhose! Thanks to the sisters, sales of the hosiery have spiked nearly 85 percent in England, The Telegraph reports. Buckingham Palace enforces a strict dress code for women—they must wear stockings and closed-toed shoes, and royals like Queen Elizabeth, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall and Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie all slip them on when they’re out. The look is also practical, as pantyhose provide extra warmth on chilly nights and a layer of protection against the sun.

How would they be too conservative?

-Sarah on July 13th, 2011

Hosery is perfect for OLD ladies….if your legs are shaved and cared for, there is no reason for pantyhose. I hate hose and will never wear them again…being incased in nylon in itself is not my cup of tea. The Brits are more than
welcome to bring sexy back with hosery. I will keep my gams free in Texas….Thank you..

-Karla on July 13th, 2011

I never even noticed she had been wearing them til they were pointed out on the Canada tour. I think they look great, and give her legs a great finish and color. Anyone know what kind of brand the wear? I want a pair like theirs that look natural and sheer, but orange.

-SE on July 14th, 2011

** Not Orange

-SE on July 14th, 2011

Legs look so much lovlier and sleeker with pantyhose. I love them

-Bravo on July 14th, 2011

The Palace have it right – hose and closed toe shoes are the only way to go for formal dress. Not only do they make your legs look better they also help to prevent blisters especially when it’s hot. If you don’t like the feel of nylons wear flesh colour fishnets – all the benefits of nylons but the breeze can get at your legs and they feel almost as if you’re not wearing anytning. Comfortable, sexy and a bit edgy too! However with sandals it has to be bare legs. X

-Jane & Marilyn on July 14th, 2011

They look OK with Kate’s formal clothes but not with Pippa’s casualwear. Also…I am sort of sick of Pippa being held up as this style icon because most of the time her clothes are super ugly! See above…ugly skirt, ugly dress, and mismatched cardigan (in second pic). And People is always showing pictures of her in like, sleeveless denim shirts. Ugh-ly.

-Eli on July 14th, 2011

CLASSY women wear stockings for all but casual occasions.

-Peaches31410 on July 14th, 2011

It is actually quite common for women in England to wear nude stockings with dresses and skirts. So they are not doing something that would be considered different or out of the ordinary in the UK.

-Amarelain on July 14th, 2011

I’m not a big fan of sheer pantyhose and avoid them all the time. Since my skintone is in the brown family, I feel like all the pantyhose that are suppose to match look really weird on me.

-Tara on July 14th, 2011

I was raised to always wear pantyhose, especially at work. I find it difficult to wear as most women ask me if I am wearing it, how inappropriate! I like that the look is coming back!

-RM on July 15th, 2011

Lets all run to Nordstroms and buy pantyhose…NOT…

-Karlie on July 15th, 2011

Hmm Peaches 31410, the use of the word classy to mean refined is well, declasse…

-Zanna on July 15th, 2011

Bare legs are fine with casual clothes, i.e., shorts, capris, etc., but if your goal is to be dressed up, put on the pantythose, ladies! Pantyhose most certainly look better than bare legs with skirts, dresses, and suits in a business office environment. I’ve never stopped wearing pantyhose, although no one else at my office wears them. I confess that I have been made to feel “old” and out of place with them on. On the other hand, having very fair skin, I look and feel much better wearing them (nude, in a shade that matches my skin). And I would have blisters in no time if I tried wearing close-toed shoes with no pantyhose! And wouldn’t your feet sweat and feel yucky???

On the flip side, how would it look if men came to the office with suits, ties, and no socks???

Hooray for the Middleton girls! Show your class, and keep wearing the pantyhose! You look fabulous!

-Elaine on July 16th, 2011

If you think nude bare leggs look good and better than hosed leggs you need glasses!
I don’t care how much you care for your leggs, pantyhose and stockings IMPROVE ON THAT!

IF you want your bare leggs fine, that’s your right as a human. Just know you are becoming a minority in the fashion world and missing out.

w00t! Hosed leggs are back baby!

-Alissa on July 16th, 2011

Ladies, please stop saying pantyhose are “old fashion” and “oh so 80s” because they’re not. Thanks to classy women like Kate and Pippa, they’re making a come back in a big way. Pantyhose make women’s legs look so much better than without. If you want to have the smooth, oiled look on your legs (like strippers) than go right ahead. Pantyhose compliments any look and they make dresses, skirts (and even sexy shorts) that much hotter.

Speaking as a guy, I appreciate a girl who takes the extra time to look like a lady. Living in LA, I’m sick of the typical girl outfit – designer jeans, with a funky top and pointy heels. Go out on a Saturday night and I guarantee 90% of the women are wearing a similar outfit. How boring and unoriginal can you be? I appreciate a girl who puts on a hot dress, puts on a nice pair of Wolford pantyhose with heels to match – there is nothing like it. Ladies who like to wear pantyhose, keep on wearing them, guys do appreciate it.

Kate Middleton, thank you for being you and for showing the world that wearing pantyhose is elegant, sexy and has never gone out of style.

-Tom on July 16th, 2011

You ladies don’t have to wear hosiery. Just note how great her legs look in them, though. There is no reasonable person who can deny that. I don’t care if you are 22 years old and think your legs are awesome. If you had the upscale hose she has on your legs would get far more attention and you’d actually look well dressed…for a change.

-john on July 16th, 2011

Nude, Suntan and other flesh tone pantyhose are the most amazingly sexy things I’ve ever seen. The bare leg look shows flaws on most legs. I hate that women don’t wear pantyhose as much anymore. At least there are places like Hooters that the amazingly beautiful look of pantyhose clad legs can be appreciated.

-Bret on July 17th, 2011

They never match my skin tone! Is like when you put fundation in your face and is a bit darker than the neck and you and up with two tones face!

-Carol Fernandez on July 17th, 2011

I always hose! I save the shimmery ones for special occasions. Why aren’t papparazzi following me around?

-Lmoney on July 18th, 2011

Love the look of pantyhose! I love bare legs too, but just not for me. I can shave, tan and moisturize, but still not feel comfortable.

Thanks Pippa and Kate for giving us less than perfect leg ladies the choice of pantyhose again!

-Charlotte on July 18th, 2011

For me this is as unpractical as it gets… In cold weathers this “trend” is ok… I supossed. But in tropical weathers like Costa Rica’s pantyhose are real TORTURE…

-GlryR on July 19th, 2011

Panty hose make your legs look so much better. I judge speech meets for high schools and find that the girls who want to look ‘grown up’ do not wear panty hose AND wear high-high heeled shoes that are either too big or they cannot walk it or both. Not very grown up at all. Panyhose should be a must unless you are going very casual and no where you need to look professional.

-gmas on July 19th, 2011

Nude hosiery is fabulous to wear in cooler temps in hot weather bare legs are best. Remembering wearing nude hosiery 25 years ago not so much now great to see how things stay the same and never change. Oh yeah my wedding dress looked just like Kate Middleton’s sister dress in the wedding. My wedding was 1989 classic always wins!

-monica on July 20th, 2011

Yea! I do miss pantyhose! When dressing for work or for a night out I would match the hose to the seasons. Summer the tan ones…always made my legs look so good and you didn’t have to worry about going to a tanning salon . I do think that most women’s legs look the best in hose. With this NO hose fashion, I have seen many battle scars on naked legs…bruises, cuts..dark spots, wrinkled knees..PLease bring back the hose for women who want to get a little class back into their life.

-BekBek on July 20th, 2011

If the natural look is so great… could we go back to you getting rid of the bras? Let’s go open chest in the office. :)

-Dale on July 21st, 2011

Ladies, we Gents simply adore you in silken Pantyhose.
(even if we are too shy to admit to it at 1st) :)

-Gentlemen everywhere on July 22nd, 2011

Hummm… Go figure. 73% Votes for YES! I guess the bare-legged movement is going on the wayside like 2010. LOL
Gentlemen prefer women in hosiery anyway. It doesn’t matter if you “think” your legs look nice, shaved, tone, tan, etc. You could take a hot model bare legs and the “girl next door” wearing nude or tan tights, and the guys will flock to the girl in tights every time hands down.

-AD on July 22nd, 2011

Wow…anything passes for a “trend” these days. Kate and Pippa have also worn extremely large and unsightly hats on several occasions. Are we going to make this a “trend” as well? Pantyhose are only practical and comfortable if you live in a climate that accommodates having an extra layer of unnecessary material covering your entire lower half (I mean, it’s the end of July and it’s only 66 degrees F in London, UK). Seriously…if Kate or any of the royal family lived in Charleston, SC with heat indices of 110+ all summer long and average “fall” weather being mid to upper 80s, you better believe they’d be sporting nude legs. Also, in response to Dale, Gentlemen Everywhere and AD: not all men prefer women with hose or tights on. Honestly, I’m 28 years old and have yet to meet a guy that wants a woman with beautiful, toned legs to cover them up with some hideous, shiny nylon material (granted, I haven’t met any of the men posting on here that they LOVE hosiery on women). The men I know (including my husband) think hosiery of any kind is just odd unless it’s cold outside. Perhaps those who live in coastal regions near the beach, as we do, prefer style choices that are a bit more comfortable and a bit less pretentious. But to each, their own.

-HD on July 29th, 2011

I wear Pantyhose everyday. The fabrics today make them easier to put on and more comfortable to wear then in the 70’s & 80’s. On avg I get 6 wears or more out of tha newly opened package. I wear them in the summer with short & Snorks, and I wear them with pants and skirts other days. I like the way they make my leggs look and feel, and I have received nice compliments from men, and some ladies when I have a skrit or shorts on. To prove my point I went to the local mall with my husband and walked through with skirt and bare legs, and not one person made a remark or gave me a second look. The next day we went back to the same mall, and this time I had Tan color silky hose on, and a skirt, my husband walked a few steps back, and my husband told me men kept doing double takes . When we went to the food court, 2 different guys came up and asked for my name and phone #.
Think of hose as make-up for the legs. If you take a 10 – 30 minutes in the morning to makeup your face and do your hair, and pick an outfit, then why not take an extra 5 minutes to makeup your legs.
More and More younger women are wear hose again, and they are showing up on the fashion runways too.
They are making a come back. All be it slow, I do see more women wearing them latly.

-Donna From Philly on July 30th, 2011

As for me, I wear neither hose nor heels. Who passed the law that women have to wear hot, synthetic second skins on their legs anyway? I love how marketing exploits our propensity to ape what others do–it’s called fashion.

-Carlyn on August 4th, 2011

Yea for style! I’m always appalled when I see a woman in a professional situation w/bare legs (i.e. Katie Couric when she’s interviewing someone–so low-brow). It’s like a man wearing a suit w/no socks.

-notenufcash on August 16th, 2011

Put on panty hose..PLEASE. I look at photos of celebrities without hose and I am not impressed. If they would look at how horrible their knees look, they would run to a department store and grab a bag of hose. Even some of the young ladies have horrible knees. If you wear a nice dress or suit, please put on hose. You do not look as good as you think without them.

-Clarina on August 18th, 2011

It’s too darn hot here in Florida (almost year-round) for pantyhose during the day. Almost no one wears them. At night, for a formal event, it’s a different story.

-Sophie on August 18th, 2011

There is a time and place for both looks. I really prefer the pantyhose look over bare any day. Keep in mind ladies, no matter how tan you are or how well you take care of your legs, you always have blemishs or some imperfections that are gonna take away from the look of your legs. That is the big avantage of pantyhose, they hide all those little things. If you are gonnna take them time to dress nicely to go out or to work, spend another minute to slip on some pantyhose. It can really make a difference between getting a you look nice comment and a WOW! you look great comment.

-RCL on August 19th, 2011

Please, please, please with sugar on top DO NOT bring back those awful things! I hate them they are ugly and unbelievabley hot and cumbersome in the Summer. I do love tights though in the Winter.

-Mary on August 23rd, 2011

Pantyhose forever. Attending any function without other than a day at the beach just looks silly. And no, I’m not an old lady, I’m in my 20′s. Hopefully Americans will start to dress a little better and stop being the laughing stock of the fashion world.

-Danitza on October 10th, 2011

I have been wearing pantyhose for so many years……I am glad to see the Royals do too.

I am not and old lady but I think pantyhose make women’s legs look refined and toned and elegant.

-Leigh on October 24th, 2011

I teach a business etiquette class for my employer and came upon this website in my research. I, too, was questioning whether a nude leg was appropriate for business formal attire. The average age of our employees is 32, so bare legs abound! After seeing the article, conferring with two etiquette consultants, and reading the comments on this website, I have my answer. Hose is appropriate for business formal dress, along with suits and matching shoes. After all, our customers appreciate “conservative” as it attests to the personal touch they appreciate in our service and the trust they place in our products.

-Carly on October 31st, 2011

I thank Kate for staying simple and being who she is. Pantyhose is the in thing i have worn it for a long time and just wearing it without it i feel naked and not smart at all. All women should wear pantyhose.

-liz manyala on November 3rd, 2011

Tights are NOT just for older women! People who think that way are out of date and too lazy to put them on! Clearly hosiery makes your legs look superior to bare legs. And I care enough to also protect my hot legs from the elements. Suntan tights are the bomb!!!

-K on November 3rd, 2011

I see nothing wrong with hose. I think they are great for shoes that are not comfortable when wearing them on barefeet. I have some nice heels but they are not comfortable on bare skin. Also, pantyhose go nice with more formal attire. Bare skin is definately more comfortable in general but depending on how formal an event is, I can understand one wearing pantyhouse, whether it be nude or black. It makes things dressier.

-guitarandstyle on November 7th, 2011

well, if you are born in northern parts of europa, like i am, you would totally understand wearing panythose. if i go with bare legs, i would litterally freeze my feets off! and my ass.

-Ingrid on November 28th, 2011

If Tim Gunn will wear his leather shoes without socks then I’ll be happy to wear mine without hose or knee hi’s. My bare feet in leather shoes rub against the leather and by the end of the night I’m in agony. It’s as simple as that. Heels and flats hurt without something protecting the feet. Has nothing to do with style or age or being old fashion. In summer I love samdals, but in other seasons up here in the North I think it’s classless to wear shoes without some form of sock or nylon.

-Bobby on December 2nd, 2011

Pantyhose never fit right on me; constantly riding down my waist to my butt. I always thought women had to wear pantyhose as a rule, but I’m glad to know many women, besides me, have opted out of this fashion trend. I don’t want the trend to come back EVER.

-Donna on December 2nd, 2011

I am a fan of looking my best when I go out and bare legs are just downright ugly when a woman or girl is wearing suits, skirts or dresses. No one has perfect legs without flaws and when you go bare legged it all show. Ask men … the ones I know like seeing women in pantyhose. I worked for a Fortune 500 company for all of my life and the last 4 years I worked in a backwater area in the East. Oh how terrible these women dressed and they went without hose which made them look worse. Their excuse …. it was too much trouble to wear hose and it was too hot. My observation, the majority of the ladies were fat, frumpy and lazy so that is why they made the excuse that they were to hot in the hose.

-Darlene on December 2nd, 2011

Well let see some moderan day women belive its to much bother to wear them
That said how many other things are to much bother for them.
Men do think women look more better in them and the way me and my friends think
If a women is to lazy to put a pair of hose on to make her self look great
What else is she to lasy to do for you or herself or someone else…….Thnik about it.

Chris

-Chris on December 3rd, 2011

Bare legs can be lovely but hosiery is almost always an improvement when worn in good taste, and obviously not because they are unattractive or detract from the legs they embrace. The logic that hose are anachronistic begs the question “Is shaving your legs anachronistic?” Generally like Gunn’s fashion comments but way off the mark here. And if hose are fun, stockings are even more so. A throwback perhaps, but still beautiful to behold. (and to touch)
