Who Is Philip Treacy? Meet the Hat Designer to the Stars

May 4, 2011 @ 5:50 pm

When princesses and pop stars want a statement-making hat they turn to their favorite milliner: Philip Treacy (shown with Kate Winslet). Recently, his fanciful creations graced the heads of Sarah Jessica Parker, Serena Williams, and 37 members of the Royal Wedding party. So who is Mr. Treacy? The Irish-born designer has been creating toppers since the age of five, when he made miniature hats for his sisters’ dolls, and he later honed his sewing skills at Dublin’s National College of Art and Design and London’s Royal College of Art. Just before his graduation, Treacy showed his hats to Tatler fashion director Isabella Blow, who took the young designer under her wing. Treacy opened up shop in the basement of Blow’s London home, and eventually scored jobs designing hats for Chanel, Alexander McQueen, Ralph Lauren, and more. The five-time British Accessory Designer of the Year award winner has a loyal following: Lady Gaga, Demi Moore, and the British royal family are some of his best clients. Reese and Rob in London, Beyonce Goes to School, and More!

May 4, 2011 @ 5:00 pm

Though she posed with heartthrob Robert Pattinson on the red carpet, Reese Witherspoon described her animal attraction to a different co-star at the London premiere of Water for Elephants. “At the very end of the film I got to hold a baby lion. It was amazing,” Witherspoon (in Stella McCartney) remembered. “It was, like, clawing at my thigh!” In New York City, Beyonce got up early the morning after the Met Costume Institute Gala in order to join a group of students at PS 161 in Harlem for a dance class, while another dance-loving singer, Ciara, kicked up her heels at the Candie’s Foundation “Event to Prevent.” See all the photos from last night’s hottest parties in the gallery!

Boxing Champion Wladimir Klitschko Gives Girlfriend Hayden Panettiere Style Advice!

May 4, 2011 @ 4:05 pm

Hayden Panettiere confessed to InStyle at a recent Hollywood party that her style advice comes from two places. First, her friends: “I’m constantly calling up my best friends going, ‘What am I going to wear? Does this go together?’” she told us. The second source is a more unlikely one—her 6-foot7-inch Ukrainian heavyweight boxing champion boyfriend Wladimir Klitschko. “Now he spends a good amount of time picking out his outfits and he picks them out well,” she said of Klitschko’s style, adding that he likes to throw in his opinion for her looks, too. “He does a really good job [at picking his outfits], but now he also critiques my outfits. He’s like, ‘Baby, that clutch—you’re so small. You need a smaller one. It’s too big.’ I’m like, ‘Who gave you the idea…fine!’” And, as you can see from the photo, the work of Klitschko paid off, as Panettiere successfully chooses appropriately-sized accessories!

What Will Happen to Kate Middleton’s Wedding Dress?

May 4, 2011 @ 3:00 pm

That’s the question we’re all wondering after seeing the exquisite Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen gown Catherine Middleton wore to marry Prince William on April 29th. Turns out, it may go on public display! “The Duchess of Cambridge is considering a number of options to give members of the public the opportunity to see, close-up, the skilled British craftsmanship that went into the making of her wedding dress by Sarah Burton and her team as well as the Royal School of Needlework,” the Clarence House said in a statement to Britain’s Telegraph. In the meantime, Burton is in New York right now—not giving any hints about the future of the gown—in celebration of the new Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition opening dedicated to her designer mentor and the founder of the label, Alexander McQueen, which opens to the public today. Would you visit London to see Middleton’s wedding dress? Tell us in the comments below!
