The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual Costume Institute Gala is often called the Oscars red carpet of the East Coast, and there’s a reason why—the fashion is outstanding! Designers and celebrities flocked to the Upper East Side museum last night in their best clothes to celebrate the opening of its latest style exhibit, Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, in honor of the designer who passed away last February. Taylor Swift, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce Knowles, Kate Hudson, and more were among the star-studded guest list. Click “See the Photos” for red carpet pics and fashion credits from the Met Gala 2011! The exhibit will be open to the public May 4th through July 31st.

The stand-outs for me were Christina Hendricks, looking amazing in an amazing gown that could not have been more perfect for her, Michele Williams in a unique Miu Miu frock, Evan Rachel Wood reminiscing the best of Deco, Sofia Vergara in one of my favorite Carolina Herreras, Dakota Fanning looking impossibly ethereal, and Ashley Olsen, elegant in Dior (that fit).

Close behind them were Ashley Greene in lovely (undraped) Donna Karan; Leelee Sobieski, glamorous in white Vionnet; Solange Knowles in one of my favorite designers (and looking far better than her sister, who wore one of the tackiest dresses in history); Emily Browning with a beautiful lace neckline and sleeves; Naomi Watts in a quietly lovely Stella McCartney; Diana Agron looking classy and classic in Michael Kors; Diane Kruger in a striking Jason Wu, Kristen Stewart looking interesting in Proenza Schoeler; and SJP in the real thing.

I want to put Ginnifer Goodwin on the list, except that, in the photos at least, there was something odd about the cut of the waist in her otherwise beautiful gown. Her sandals were fierce, though, and perfect for the dress. And that necklace!

Honorable Mentions to Mia Wasikowska (except that her hair was all wrong), Rachel Roy, and Alexa Chung. Special Mention to Sarah Burton. Iman and Naomi Campbell were in a class of their own.

@KateOlive–thanks for your highly-researched and thoughtful response! I agree about Dianna A — classy and classic in Michael Kors!
