How a Tornado Can Inspire Fashion Design

Apr 21, 2011 @ 5:15 pm

Rising designer Kaelen Farncombe didn’t set out to chase tornadoes. But after her brother gave her a storm-chasing trip as a Christmas gift, she went along for the ride. Turns out, it was more than just an adrenaline rush—it became the inspiration for her spring 2011 Kaelen collection. “I think it just furthered my belief that inspiration has to be organic,” Farncombe told InStyle of her trip. And with the recent tornado devastation sweeping America, it’s a particularly relevant collection. “My experience was quite removed from that kind of turmoil and devastation, as we were in areas that were very rural and there ended up being minimal damage and we got to really see and appreciate something so powerful,” she explained of the difference between her experience and the recent occurrences. “My collection focused on more the color combinations and the calm that comes after a storm, rather than the harshness of it, but [the recent storms] did remind me that there are two sides to the coin and that nature is something to be revered.” Click through the gallery to see the photographs Farncombe took on her trip, and how they translated into her spring collection, available now at Shopbop.com.

Apr 21, 2011 @ 3:20 pm

Haley Reinhart and Lauren Alaina are the only two remaining women contestants on American Idol, and they worked their feminine charm with their style during last night’s top 7 episode! We caught up with the show’s costume designer Soyon An for the inside scoop. “Haley, with her tiny frame, looked chic with a ‘50s pin-up inspired dress,” An told InStyle of Reinhart’s red polka dotted frock by Stop Staring ($114 at StopStaring.com). “The tailored look made the dress look sexy and sweet on Haley.” As for Alaina, An gave the contestant the country look she loves. “I wanted Lauren to look young and fun and bring back her sweet country self this week,” An said of the outfit, which consisted of a Guess jacket, Marciano top, Wet Seal skirt and accessories, and Boot Star boots.

Jennifer Lopez’s Christian Cota Bandeau Top Is One-of-a-Kind!

Apr 21, 2011 @ 1:15 pm

Jennifer Lopez stopped by a Los Angeles Best Buy on Monday to celebrate the launch of her new album and she decided show some skin for the event! The American Idol judge and mother of two bared her abs in a black taffeta oxidized beaded bandeau by Christian Cota, which she paired with Tibi pants, a Topshop jacket, and Jimmy Choo heels. We caught up with Cota (inset), the designer behind her top, to find out if it’s available, and as it turns out, it is a one-of-a-kind piece developed for his spring 2011 collection. The New York designer thought it looked great on her because it balanced “the femininity and strength she always exudes,” he told InStyle. While this particular top is unique, tell us, would you ever wear a belly-baring look like Jennifer Lopez?
