It’s a sad day for daytime TV: ABC just announced that it will cancel both All My Children and One Life to Live as of September 2011 and January 2012, respectively. That means we have to bid adieu to one of our favorite daytime characters of all time, All My Children’s Erica Kane, played by Susan Lucci, who originated the role when the show premiered in 1970. Lucci made Emmy history in 1999 when she finally won her first award after 19 nominations. Lucci issued this statement after the cancellation announcement: “It’s been a fantastic journey,” she said. “I’m looking forward to all kinds of new and exciting opportunities.” Take a look at Susan Lucci’s most memorable looks in the gallery. Will you miss watching these two shows? Tell us in the comments!

I have been watching All My Children since I was 13 years old. I would come home from school and my mom and I watched it together. I have recorded this show every day for the past 46 years and don’t want to miss an episode!! I’m very upset to hear this terrible news!! To hear that they are replacing it after all these years is unbelievable!!

-v on April 14th, 2011

I am so sorry to see this happen to the medium of the “soap opera.” Life is changing faster than it needs to and adding all sorts of television that is nothing but the worst in favor of supposedly representing “what the people want.” They don’t speak for me or millions of others, and I am very sorry to see all of the shows being cancelled that are. Good luck to all of you. What a shock.

-smartgirl06 on April 14th, 2011

I am very sad to see All My Children come to an end! I have watched this show since I was 13 and have not missed an episode since. I tape them to this day, and it will be GREATLY missed! Cancelling this show is not what everyone wants,I did not want to see this show end!

-L on April 14th, 2011

This is so sad, I have watched the show since it first begin! Please have a second thought on this one!

-Jean on April 14th, 2011

This is unbelievable! MILLIONS OF VIEWERS WILL BE so unhappy. Times have changed but there is still a huge fan base for BOTH OF THESE SHOWS. I am so deeply saddened by this news and I am wiping away tears. I FEEL AS THOUGH I HAVE LOST A DEAR FRIEND… ….SO SHOCKING!!

-Suzanne on April 14th, 2011

This is so sad, I have watched the show since it first begin! Please have a second thought on this one! That is the only soap I watched, the other was Another World and it was cancelled!

-Freda on April 14th, 2011

Why in the world would you want to cancel one of the best shows on TV? I started watching this show when I was in college (When AMC first started) and haven’t missed a day yet. All three of my daughters watch this show and I know of hundreds of other people that come home at night and go to their recorded TV and chill with AMC. You are taking away a part of our lives that helps us cope with the situations we find ourselves in day to day. Please reconsider, You will be letting a lot of American People down Women and Men alike.

-Joedy Packard on April 14th, 2011

I have grown up watching these shows and I am in disbelief! What is Brian Frons thinking? This is such as sad day. My mother loves watching both of these shows and she is so upset about this decision. I’ve got news for them, I will not be watching the new shows, so good luck on the ratings.

-JB on April 14th, 2011

This is terrible news. While we were overseas (in the military) it kept us close with home. I certainly will not be watching ANOTHER food show!!!!!!!!

-bjhorne on April 14th, 2011

Been watching since high school – I think it started with watching “Dark Shadows”, then AMC was next so got into it. go home for lunch most days and watch, or record. I have about 5 to watch right now. My daughter sent me a text and said “sorry about All My Children” – I thought she had done something wrong…then heard the news. Not good – will be very bored with reality tv. Love all the characters – will surely miss Erica, but also Tad, Jesse, etc.

-Nanette on April 14th, 2011

I am so upset about hearing the news that my 2 favorite soaps will be cancelled. I have watched these since I was a teenager and schedule my life around these shows. I wont be watching the food and health show that you are putting on in thier place, in fact I might never watch ABC again after this awful decision!!! This is so tragic to take a couple of the best soaps off the air!!. ABC you’re gonna lose a ton of viewers on this one.

-Karen Banks on April 14th, 2011

All My Children was the best soap opera there was! So sad to see it ending. I love the characters and the storyline. I don’t understand what the point is to cancel it. It’s a great show.

-Sarah on April 14th, 2011

you cannotstop all my children i watch this show since jan 5 1970 and i never missed a day what will happen to the cast please reconider i am a very devoted fan WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO THE FANS

-gloria ferrer on April 15th, 2011

This is so sad, and also disgusting… I am a senior and the show sort of “made my day.” There is precious little decent watching now-a-days. I will find some other means of entertainment on some other network… Once the show is over, I’ll never watch ANYTHING on this network..

-marilyn on April 15th, 2011

This is truly sad news. These actors are amazing and the writers have kept me watching since I was a teenager. What on earth were they thinking with replacing this show? Why not move it to another channel and open up the time slot if necessary? Americans certainly do not want more talk shows and food channels ~ there are so many of these already! We enjoyed daytime soaps because it was a mental escape from the norm ~ wealthy, drama…. We need more health channels like we need another news station: not at all! Hope you are prepared to watch your ratings & by result, your profits deminish.

-Renee Va on April 15th, 2011

I am so dissapointed that these shows are being canceled, both AMC and OLTL, I have been watching them along with my mom, aunt and nan since I was 7 or 8, I’m 17 now, these shows have been with my for literally over half my life, and I absolutley love them. The characters, they are like family the way the actors express these fictional characters have made them so real for me over the years, with the help of the amazing writers. It is honestly a shame that these beautiful actors and writers are losing this amazing opprotunity, even though I dont have a doubt they will all continue to shine.

Just out of curiosity, how do they manage to end shows like these? They cant just kill everyone off, but they cant just give happy endings either.

-kiesha on April 15th, 2011

This is the hardest show for me for them to cancel. It is the only show I watch for daytime tv all the other stuff is boring and I have been watching it since I was a little girl. Now home with my little girl watching it. Such faithful lifelong viewers and if ratings are low it is because of the time of day it is on and many people catch up on soap net. So many people unemployed and so many viewers really upset. This is much more personal than a regular show gettig cancelled when you dedicate watching something for 30+ years of your life. My parents are so upset and my grandparents. Nobody wants a show called The Chew. Aren’t we fat enough in America to talk more about food and their are food networks and health channels why make the whole day boring. It really is a big mistake. So many shows will come and go now during that time slot because nobody will be recording The Chew while they are at work like they did All My Children. The ratings will be lower and loyal people will not want to give the station ratings for taking away a show that feels like home to them.

-kim goodwin on April 15th, 2011

This is a very sad day here in America!!! I have watched All My Children since the 70s with my mother. Then through college and when I was home sick from work I would always tune in to catch up. Now I am retired and try to watch it as much as I can. I don’t think that the “suits” at ABC realize that there are many other people out there who are basically shut ins and look forward to All My Children and One Life To Live every single day. Shame on them to think we want to watch another food or health related talk show!!!

-MJ on April 15th, 2011

We all have our stories about how much our soaps mean to us and how long we’ve been watching. Now is the time to be proactive. Go on the Oprah Winfrey website message boards. ALL her messages are from people pleading with her to pick up the soaps on her OWN network. This is a great idea. If anyone can save them, she can!!

-celia on April 15th, 2011

Dumbest.. Choice.. Ever.. thats all i can say.. All my children is the best show ever.. and its classic. NO other shows will carry on like this on did.. They’re making a huge mistake..

-Lexi on April 15th, 2011

This sucks

-Erin on April 15th, 2011

You know – it was bad enough when you cancelled Guiding Light and As the World Turns and quite refreshing to see a lot of Guiding Light and As the World Turns folk showin up on One Life to Live. Abc – I hope your ratings go straight down the toilet – you site low ratings saying “only” 2.5 million viewers tuned in to All My Children and 2.6 million to One Life to Live because more people are working?? Did you all ever hear of “recording”. I am no longer working but when I was and even when I was on vacation, I recorded everything – Do you people in your high powered seats think that these 2.5 million and 2.6 million people are going to tune in to watch your stupid food chanel and talk show?? — You claim the mediun age is 57 – well as far as I know, most 57 year olds already know how to cook – and if one more reality show comes out , I might as well pitch out the television. I recall a few years back, when interviewed, Carol Burnett was asked if she thought that any other “classic” comedies would be produced. Her response was no, they are too busy saving money with reality shows. She was by the way a huge All My Children fan – you have just made these 2.5 million and 2.6 million people want nothing but to keep their TV’s shut off from 1 – 3pm or they will start watching Young and he Restless and the other soaps that remain………I hope your ratings drop to theall time lows they deserve!

-u56542@yahoo.com on April 15th, 2011

I was shocked to hear about the cancellation of All my children. I have watched this show from the beginning and I continue to tape this show everyday to watch after work. The people on this show are like an extended family and I am very upset to think I will no longer view them on tv. Please reconsider your decision. You are upsetting many people with this decision.

-paula on April 15th, 2011

This is unbelievable! I have watched this show since I was little. My Grawney watches it still and can not believe it is being cancelled for some health and food shows. I do enjoy food shows but that is what FOODnetwork, etc is for. Well things happen….

-Briana on April 15th, 2011

Like a lot of the AMC and OLTL fans, I started watching both at the beginning. When I worked, I taped them. Since he retired, my husband enjoys them with me! This is almost like losing a huge part of your neighborhood and a plane load of close friends at once. It’s sad! It really hurts! These were audio/video NEVERENDING stories; now ABC is saying they are going to end them! No one seems to be talking about the fact that ABC relocated SOME of the cast of AMC all the way across country from New York to L.A. (and let others go or “retire”) little more than a year ago! Way to go ABC! Disrupt all those lives and then cancel the show. As many others before me have said so eloquently “ABC, YOU SUCK!”

-Mary on April 15th, 2011

It’s sad that a mainstay will be cancelled, for more garbage talk shows about nothing. Aren’t the airwaves filled with enough people who have nothing to do but talk? C’mon networks find a clue!!!!!!!!!

-Brownie on April 15th, 2011

I have been watching AMC since 2002 so I may be considered a late bloomer, but like many others, I am in agreement that the network is making a huge error in cancelling the show. Daytime drama is an art form, just like reality and talk shows and I think is it unfair that soaps are being cancelled to be replaced with useless shows. There are so many reality and talk shows on both during the day and in the evening; there is barely anything decent to watch. But AMC is a great show – it tackels topics that affect viewes and explores story-lines we can all relate to. In addition, there is the escapism aspect of it as well – the fashion, the drama!
If Oprah can save the soaps then more power to her! She would just be a greater hero and her network could result in ABC losing vieweship and money (would serve them right)
I guess its up to the fans to voice their opinion and save our daytime storybook characters. I know I will certainly miss the “me time” AMC gives me. And as for the replacement programs – I hope they crash and burn.

-Nix on April 15th, 2011

I can GUARANTEE CBS that NO ONE will be taping OR watching the replacement shows for AMC or OLTL, because the world if television is over-innundated with health and cooking shows! I am SICK TO DEATH of them, and PURPOSELY avoid the channels that air them. I quickly became bored to DEATH with Biggest Loser, and i know of very very few people who watch it anymore. Anyway..at least watching these two soaps is entertaining. They keep things so fresh and up to the minute pertinent on AMC! I’ve been a fan ever since i was 14, when it aired!! I miss miss AMC the most, but i also enjoy OLTL. This is TERRIBLE! I am SO UPSET!! I tape these shows every single day! I never miss an episode! SHAME ON CBS & ALL THE SPONSORS!!! :( I’m seeing CBS continuosly failing me more & more with their very disappointing programming choices of late. I am ALL DONE with CBS, once AMC & OLTL go off the air!! GOOD RIDDENCE TO BAD TRASH TV PROGRAMMING CBS!!!! :( :(

-Suzisfl on April 15th, 2011

Health and food shows…. BLAH there are SO many of these BORING shows on now. I need my AMC and OLTL. I fI wanted to watch food or health, I would turn to the Food channel or the Health Network!!! C’mon… think about this.

-Lisa on April 15th, 2011

I have nothing to watch now. I can’t stand court show and Dr.Oz is the only health show I can stomach. I guess I will watch dvd’s now. I have over 5 hundred channels and not one of them can hold a candle to All My Children and One Life to Live. ABC will have no ratings in the day time.

-ness on April 15th, 2011

So very sad…I am a busy working mom but All My Children is on my DVR daily. It’s the only show I get to sit down and watch on my own. It’s like losing a friend:(

-Kimberly on April 15th, 2011

As a blogger noted: only if you’re an over-tanned, ill-behaved no talent, can you get a show these days. Let’s face it, soap operas aren’t brain food, but most reality and talk shows these days cater to society’s lowest denominator (both intellectually and morally). I much prefer AMC to most reality and talk shows, and record only AMC and Oprah on a daily basis. But guess what? Sometimes I delete Oprah without watching but I never miss AMC.
The writing has suffered since Agnes Nixon delegated head writing duties (and/or oversight of day-to-day production), but it’s reprehensible that the network would relocate the stars from NY to LA only to shut it all down just months later.
And as for Susan Lucci’s “road show” confirming the show won’t be cancelled, well, stars do what they’re told to do by their producers. The truth of the situation remains to unfold, but I like many other fans will not watch whatever the network drops into that time slot. With both Regis and Oprah exiting near the end of the year, ABC daytime may be hoping to stop the bleeding with new programming (or give it facelift), but canceling AMC won’t improve the situation (especiallly given the options for replacement programming).

-meh on April 15th, 2011

This is so wrong!!!! I have watched All My Children since the 70s with my mother. I work every day and look forward to coming home and wathcing All My Children on my DVR. I was 10 when the show started. My mom passed away in 2005 and watching All My Children keeps my Mom close to me. If you take this show away from me it will be like taking a part of my Mom away again. I record all 3 shows (All My Children, OLTL, and General Hospital) every day and NEVER miss a show. I am not sure what Im going to do now!!!! I do know I will not be watching or taping the new shows that are taking over All My Children and OLTL. Like everyone else if I wanted to watch a food show I would turn to food network. I hope ABC ratings drop more with the new shows then with the soaps and ABC will know what a mistake they have made by dropping these great shows!!!!!!!!

-Donna on April 16th, 2011

I just cant believe they are cancelling All My Children. I have watched it since the early 80′s before I got married. I continue to tape it whenever I am at work and it is on. I wont be taping a food show thats for sure. Please reconsider keeping All My Children on the air, even if another network picks it up. This is just ridiculous to get rid of a show thats been on for more than 40 years. Its had so many great stories over the years. I will really miss it.

-Debbie on April 16th, 2011

i have been watching all my children for years and i am very upset that it is coming to an end, i seriously start to cry when i found out and i still hold hope maybe it wont happen or someone else will pick it up but not likely. this show has become like a dear friend to me and i will grieve for it for a very long time. i love the characters and the charcters i hate i love to hate! all my children i will sincerely miss you.

-Erin on April 16th, 2011

PLEASE don’t take All My Children off of the air. PLEASE?!?! No more to be said!

-Lavonda Winfield on April 18th, 2011

I’ve been watching AMC since it first aired and I cant believe they are cancelling it. I hope another network will consider picking up All My Children. This is so ridiculous to get rid of a show that’s been on for more than 40 years and addresses many social issues. With Oprah leaving and now AMC daytime tv will have a very large hole. We will miss you Erica Kane.

-Lisa on April 19th, 2011

I’ve been watching AMC for years…..used to record it while at work and looked forward to watching in the evening when chores/kids are done. It is a great show, timely, great acting, great writing. Does all TV have to be geared to the “preferred younger/consumer crowd”? Can we stand one more reality show, cooking show, talk show and lame comedies with laugh tracs? I’m really upset! Now that I’m retired I look forward to AMC in the afternoon. Please don’t go!

-Vivian on April 21st, 2011

Watched with my mom who watched since before I was born. She used to watch during her break at school, then I set up to record it at home… Went through 3vhs players for it too! I love this show. It brought me through the loss of my son with the loss of leora and through another pregnancy along side babe and bianca. I pray there is some channel that will pick this programming up. I wonder if they compared ratings to other shows ratings. Why not consider putting it up online for weekly episode purchases or online programming… Id pay just for AMC. ABC just keeps cancelling all of the good shows, im starting to think they have a bunch of old farts and really young immature men running the station since they are airing over programmed items and atupid funny stuff. Leave that to fox, ABC you are the frontrunner for drama and that is what your fans want you to remain being!

Im so disappointed. Its like losing my family. I love AMC!

-brandi on April 25th, 2011

I’m so upset. DON’T CANCELL AMC. I also watch OLTL but would rather keep AMC. REALLY another food & lifestyle show. Let’s see how long they last before cancelled.

-Jan on April 26th, 2011

I am devastated at the cancellation of the soaps, mainly All My children…………Keep hoping that another network picks them up, I hear it is doubtful though. I have been watching since it began! We are loyal viewers and this is the thanks we get????!!!! Stars had even taken a pay cut to help, I know Susan Lucci did for sure. Someone needs to step up soon! The storylines have been great lately! I heard Zach is cominh back. I loved him but he was gone and love kendal with Griffin now! All these new endings to “wrap it up” is ruining what is going on now! Stop and someone help!!!!!!! It will be too late soon!

-Jayne on May 17th, 2011

Nice way to thank all of those loyal fans who stuck with these shows over so many years……way to go ABC! These shows have lasted 40 years – will any of the new ones? I seriously doubt it…..you will certainly not get any of these fans watching…..so tired of food and talk shows. So much for loyalty!

-Chris on June 24th, 2011

cancelation of one life to live and all my children is a huge mistake. i for one have no intention of viewing the food ,and health shows that the network is replacing in their time slots.
i am a senior citizen who faithfully have watched these soaps, and when i was not able to, always recorded them.
i will miss the actors who did such fine work in portraying the story lines.
i hope in time that the network will reconsider their decision and bring both soaps back.
