How did you celebrate the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day yesterday? Michelle Obama spoke at two receptions (one with President Obama), and finished the day by honoring female leaders at the International Women of Courage Awards with one of the country’s most prominent female leaders: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The awards recognized women from around the globe for their leadership fighting for women’s issues like social justice, human rights, and advancement. “We do this to send a clear message to all of you, our Women of Courage, and to women like you around the world that you are never alone in your struggle,” Obama said. “People everywhere who care about freedom and justice and equality will walk with you.” Tell us: Who would you have honored for the occasion?
Chanel released one photo of Blake Lively‘s new campaign for the label’s Mademoiselle handbag line earlier this week, and more images are trickling out now. Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld photographed the Gossip Girl star in Paris for the campaign, and this moment (left) captures just some of what went on set. Kate Middleton is planning to wear multiple outfits for her April 29th wedding to Prince William, and new reports claim at least one of her dresses will be paired with flats! Middleton will wear four or five pairs of shoes with varying heel heights throughout the day, including a slipper-like style “covered in multiple layers of silk, and heavily embroidered,” Huffington Post reports. Details about the designer are still under wraps, but that didn’t stop us from playing stylist! Click through the gallery to see some of our favorite bridal flats, including picks from Pour la Victoire and Valentino (shown).
Balenciaga is extending its line of covetable accessories to pets! Joining the list of high-fashion labels with pet lines, like Gucci and Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga will launch dog leashes and collars next season, the New York Times reports. Balenciaga’s creative director Nicolas Ghesquiere‘s inspiration? His chocolate Labrador puppy named Fred (dog shown is not Fred). The items will cost from $275 to $295, and will be available in shades of neon pink, orange, yellow, and green—definitely a fashion statement for any pup in Doggy Daycare.
Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel fall 2011 collection was smoking, in a completely literal sense. A smoke print covered invitations, and once inside the Paris venue, the runway was set against a volcano backdrop. In turn, dark lava-inspired hues transpired on the runway—blacks, grays, and whites, as well as bursts of red, representing the collection’s eruption, perhaps. “This outstanding Chanel collection had a decidedly masculine bent,” InStyle‘s fashion director Cindy Weber Cleary reported from Paris. “The red cropped jacket seems to be layered over a black blazer, but in fact it’s one piece.” Jumpsuits were also popular, some even crafted in signature Chanel quilting, and there was also a heavy focus on trousers. Slouchy boots were paired with day and evening looks, as even the cocktail offering had a tough twist. Click through to see the entire Chanel fall 2011 runway show.

Alexander McQueen‘s fashion show yesterday was full of breathtaking fashion moments, not only for the white finale gowns that fueled royal speculation, but also because of the collection’s sky-high shoes. And while McQueen’s footwear is often dangerously tall on the runway, this fall’s lineup from creative director Sarah Burton is actually dangerous, with spikes protruding from metal wedges and stiletto heights reaching seven inches or more.
