Christopher Kane to Launch Collection With J Brand Jeans

Feb 24, 2011 @ 5:55 pm

Good news, denim lovers: J Brand just announced that it will collaborate with British designer Christopher Kane to launch a capsule collection for his 2012 resort collection. Kane, who just showed his fall collection during London Fashion Week last weekend, has collaborated with J Brand before—last year, J Brand founder Jeff Rudes recruited Kane for the labels 5×5 project, which tapped five British designers to create a pair of jeans (Kane’s camo style, shown left, retailed for $500). After their first successful partnership, Rudes is excited for what’s to come: “We are delighted to be working with Christopher to build a long term viable denim business with him,” Rudes said in a statement. J Brand has previously partnered with Proenza Schouler, Hussein Chalayan, Henry Duarte, and Erdem.

Preview Rodarte’s New MOCA Exhibit

Feb 24, 2011 @ 4:29 pm

Rodarte designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy previewed their first West Coast solo exhibition entitled “Rodarte: States of Matter” at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles last night. The two-level exhibit is on the sisters’ home turf—the Mulleavys are California natives—and it features 21 pieces from their previous runway collections, as well as the original ballet costumes they designed for Black Swan. “It’s a beautiful moment to be able to do something in Los Angeles,” Laura Mulleavy (left, with Diane Von Furstenberg and sister Kate) told us. “We show in New York every season, so it’s amazing to have representation of what we do here.” Following the preview, InStyle hosted a dinner in their honor at Mr. Chow in Beverly Hills. The exhibit will be open to the public March 4th through June 5th. Click through the gallery to see the celebrities at the party and preview the collection.

Where to Find Kate Middleton’s Brown Boots

Feb 24, 2011 @ 4:03 pm

Kate Middleton‘s outfit for the lifeboat naming event in Anglesey today—her first public outing with Prince William since the announcement of their engagement—not only included a brown Vivien Sheriff Millinery fascinator, but also espresso-colored ankle boots by Aquatalia. The Italian brand is sold in England exclusively at Russell & Bromley stores, and an Aquatalia representative told us that Middleton recently purchased several pairs of the label’s footwear. The same boots that Middleton wore, the “Rouge” style, are available in black and gray patent leather on Endless.com for $375.

Hailee Steinfeld Used to Model for Guess and Gap

Feb 24, 2011 @ 3:00 pm

We’re excited to see what True Grit star Hailee Steinfeld will wear to the Oscars this Sunday. Already the Best Supporting Actress nominee’s fashion choices have been admirable, wearing dresses by Prabal Gurung, Marc Jacobs, Prada, and Marchesa, to name a few. Turns out, she’s had good practice for red-carpet posing—Steinfeld started as a model! “I signed with a print agent before I signed with a theatrical agent, so I had been [modeling] for about a year before the acting really started to pick up for me,” she told Vanity Fair, adding that her first job was modeling for Gap. She also modeled for Guess Kids, and we got our hands on one her campaigns (check out an 11-year-old Steinfeld inset). Perhaps that’s when she first learned to love stripes!

Instant Fashion Week Trend: China Chic

It’s a Far East movement on the runways with designers showing China-inspired collections at New York and London Fashion Weeks. Ralph Lauren showed a red blazer with dragon embroidery; London designer Mary Katrantzou’s lineup included dresses with Chinese nautical prints; Naeem Khan said the book The Silk Road inspired the use of laser-cut red leather (China’s color) on black dresses; and Oscar de la Renta’s coats featured Chinese silk ornate prints. “It was religions of the Silk Road, how business and religion met together, and the East and the West,” Khan told InStyle of his inspiration backstage at his fashion show. “I wondered what I can take from the East, and how I live here.” Perhaps this means we’ll start to see lots more red on the red carpet…
