Runway Looks We Love: Gucci

Feb 23, 2011 @ 5:28 pm

Gucci‘s Fall 2011 collection was rich in ’70s glamour, or as InStyle‘s Ariel Foxman Tweeted: “Juicy jewel tone ’70s glam slam.” Creative director Frida Giannini created a lineup that featured fur in every color imaginable—turquoise, orange, purple and yellow. For evening, however, fur jackets were swapped for petal-covered toppers, while patent over-the-knee boots were replaced by towering T-strap platforms. Glossy dark lips added dimension to the look. Feb 23, 2011 @ 4:57 pm

Michelle Obama has a new stylist! Her name: Meredith Koop. Age: 29. “Ms. Koop’s responsibilities include advising the First Lady on her wardrobe and acting on her behalf in arranging for purchases, including considering the best offered price and buying on discount if discounts are available,” Kristina Schake, a spokeswoman for Michelle Obama, told the Washington Post. Koop is said to be responsible for Obama’s latest fashion choices, including this Alexander McQueen red ball gown (shown) and her State of the Union Rachel Roy dress. In addition to her styling duties, Schake also helps “managing the demands on her time and schedule, along with other day-to-day requirements for keeping the residence running smoothly.” So, how did Koop score the gig? She used to work for Chicago boutique owner Ikram Goldman, Obama’s previous unofficial stylist.

Inside Carmen Marc Valvo’s New Book Dressed to Perfection

Feb 23, 2011 @ 3:14 pm

If you ever desired fashion advice straight from a designer, Carmen Marc Valvo has your answer. The designer, who has dressed Taylor Swift (shown), Beyonce, and Kate Winslet, just released a book entitled Dressed to Perfection: The Art of Dressing for Your Red Carpet Moments (insets). “I’ve been doing this over 20 years, and this book has some really helpful hints on what to look for and how to choose that perfect dress,” the designer told InStyle. Chapters include Making Women Shine, The Power of Color, and Timeless Fashion. So what makes a perfect dress? “You have to feel so fabulous,” Valvo explained. “When you put it on your posture changes and your self confidence changes. When it happens, you know it. You know when that person glows.” Two of the celebrities Valvo often dresses—Katie Couric and Vanessa Williams—both contributed essays to the book, which is available now on Amazon.com for $50. A portion of proceeds from sales will be donated to National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance (the designer is a colon cancer survivor). Click through to see more celebrities wearing Carmen Marc Valvo’s designs, all of which are highlighted in the book.

Leifsdottir’s First Collection of Shoes Now Available

Feb 23, 2011 @ 3:02 pm

Leifsdottir, a luxury brand owned by the same company as Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters, debuted its first shoe collection this month. “So much passion went into designing this collection,” said Leifsdottir designer Johanna Uurasjarvi (inset) of the Scandinavian-inspired lineup. “Designing a comfortable yet beautiful shoe requires time and patience. It’s also very rewarding, as a shoe is really a small piece of sculpture.” As for the shoes (one style shown) Uurasjarvi said it’s a natural extension of the collection. “Our footwear has a distinct look and makes a chic accent to many of this season’s key looks—wide-leg trousers, long dresses and skirts.” The debut Leifsdottir footwear collection is available now for $225 to $350 at Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, and Bloomingdale’s.
