Who Will Star in the New Great Gatsby?

It’s the most coveted part since the Lisbeth Salander role in Girl With the Dragon Tattoo! Many of young Hollywood’s leading ladies are vying to play pampered rich girl Daisy Buchanan in the adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel, The Great Gatsby. Speculation swirled earlier this week that Blake Lively is in the running after she was spotted dining in New York City with Leonardo DiCaprio, who is reportedly playing Jay Gatsby, and director Baz Luhrmann.

Other actresses reportedly being considered for the role include Scarlett Johansson, Michelle Williams, Amanda Seyfried and Kiera Knightley.

Ugh. This is my favorite book of all time and no film has ever done it justice (Sorry, Redford – NOPE!!). I taught this to 16 year olds (during the one year I taught HS English) and we all shared the most amazing “teachable moment” while reading the book out loud together (the chapter where Jay is “called out” by Tom Buchanan over drinks at the Plaza Hotel – so awkward, so wonderful, so dramatic, so intense!) It is my favorite memory of teaching by far, and to me, its an example of what solidifies Fitzgerald’s writing as true genius. I will definitely see this movie, particularly because of Leo (love him), but I will do so knowing that it can’t even come close to the novel, which is literary magic.

kiera knightley would be so perfect for this role. she has an elegance and beauty that would be perfect for the 20′s time period. and she could pull off the haughty, aloof, carelessness of daisy without seeming too immature or modern. gatsby, however, could be better justified by someone other than leo…

Out of the choices, i like Amanda and Keira. Keira will obviously bring that classic beauty to the table, but I think that Amanda would really nail that young, spoiled, silly girl.
