It’s been almost three decades since the first-ever MTV Video Music Awards. And from the very beginning, stars like Madonna aimed to please their fans by shocking them, with a combination of risqué routines—remember that “Like A Virgin” floor dance?—and outré fashion. So, in anticipation of the award show’s 27th iteration, which airs on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. EST, InStyle looks back at five of the most memorable VMA performances and appearances ever, and wonders: Can we still be shocked, or have we seen it all? We’ll be watching to find out.

So Prince’s performance in ass-less pants doesn’t make the list? It was anything but mild.

When you don’t have any talent such as Madonna and Lady Gaga and of course Britney’s Spears . That you put on a freak show . If you are a person that likes to watch circus sideshow’s . Then these untalented ladies appeal to you . But when a performer can walk out onto the stage with nothing no gimmicks and perform for an hour and take you somewhere else with their talent . That is a rare thing now . I can remember seeing old shows with people like Johnny Mathis , Lena Horne , Frank Sinatra , Tony Bennett , Judy Garland . They all had one thing in common talent . These ladies have none . That’s why they do what they do . The older stars that I mentioned through the years have staying power even though some of it not even alive today they will be remembered by their legacy of music and talent . Madonna and Lady Gaga and Britney Spears will soon be forgotten . They made money but deep down inside they know what they are. I wish the entertainment world would recognize people that have worked hard to be entertainers in nothing more . Everyone is waiting for the next Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and of course Lena Horne .
