It goes without saying that we’re obsessed with Hilary Swank’s windswept hairstyle on the cover of the September issue of InStyle. (Try it on with our Hollywood Makeover Tool!) Perhaps more interesting though, is the fact that it caught the attention of one of YouTube’s hottest new beauty stars, lolamarie7, and inspired this genius how-to video. We caught up with 25-year-old hairstylist (whose real name is Jess) for a quick interview.

InStyle.com: What was special about Hilary’s hairstyle?

Jess: I love Hilary Swank and this hairstyle just seemed so natural and doable, like you wouldn’t need extensions or a ton of product to pull it off.

IS: How do you usually choose the topics for your videos?

Jess: I make them about styles I see and love in magazines, or I’ll address the most common questions I get in salon. I have a roundbrush tutorial that everyone loves, and one about getting sideswept bangs which is so old, but still really popular. People also love the one about getting Victoria’s Secret waves.

IS: When did you first get in on the YouTube game?

Jess: I guess I started about a year ago. I always used to watch how-to videos but get annoyed because the people weren’t doing it right. My husband finally told me to stop complaining and make my own, already! And I’ve always loved being in front of the camera. When I was younger, my friends and I would play talk show and they’d get annoyed at me for hogging the camera. My first beauty how-to was a little awkward, but it got better from there.

IS: Where do you see your success on YouTube going?

Jess: I remember when I first started, I thought, “Oh, I hope I can get 1,000 subscribers.” Now I have more than 13,000. I want to be the hair guru on YouTube, and I think it’s possible!

(We couldn’t agree more. For more of Jess, subscribe to her YouTube channel or follow her on Twitter @LolaMarie8!)

Jess is my all-time favorite You-tube beauty guru…she’s been a great help to me and my friends with her fabulous videos, and I always tell people about her! I knew she would eventually be “discovered”. She has that “It” factor, and I think she will be a big star some day!
