Today, Claudia Schiffer—the youngest of the crop of so-called “original supermodels” who made their mark on fashion in the late 1980s and early 1990s —turns the big 4-0. To celebrate, InStyle.com took a look back at the great eight—Schiffer, Elle Macpherson, Helena Christensen, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Stephanie Seymour and Christy Turlington—and offers updates as to where they are now. Click through the gallery below to see the supermodels then and now.

Is that seriously the only before picture Instyle could come up with for Cindy Crawford?

Beautiful Ladies young and absolutly gorgous now…uaoooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Elegant and confident besides their look!!!!

-Vanessa on August 25th, 2010

Thanks InStyle for showing Gen-X some love!

My generation is always ignored in favor of Baby Boomers or Gen Y, but as many of us enter our 40′s or are getting ready to (such as myself), it’s great to see that true beauty truly knows no age!

They all look FABULOUS! :)

-GJW on August 25th, 2010

Where is Christy Brinkley???????????????

-donna on August 25th, 2010

Can not believe you left out Christy Brinkley the original super model of America. She has the all American clean face.

-donna on August 25th, 2010

Christie Brinkley??? Seriously?? That’s a whole different generation. They’re OBVIOUSLY talking about THIS particular generation of Supermodels turning 40. FORTY. I’m pretty sure that leaves Brinkley out of the story.

-Cyn on August 25th, 2010

Actually, isn’t Twiggy credited with being the first “Supermodel” – and she’s in her 60′s now! Oh well, either way these chicks look awesome! I guess, I would look awesome too if I could afford nutritionists and trainers. ;D

@Sandra: If you’re speaking of the photo that appears with the headline….that’s Elle Macpherson, not Cindy Crawford. Clearly some sort of charity event she was participating in…I don’t think she’d show up to a fancy gig in a sweaty tee shirt. :D

-Alexa on August 26th, 2010

Thanks for showing a whole lotta love to us Gen Xer’s (those of us who are in our 30s and 40s). As someone earlier remarked we are often overlooked in favor of the decrepit, over-the-hill “we’re still young” Baby Booms or their annoying/irritating me, me, me Gen Y offspring.

By posting these ladies in their 40s, you showed us that beauty and style are timeless and letting us remember a somewhat more elegant/stylish era in the 1980s and early 90s.

Thanks again for letting Gen X show how it’s really done!

-Squincher on August 26th, 2010

That doesn’t look like Cindy Crawford. It looks like Elle.

-Katie on August 29th, 2010

Sadly, I think it’s been easy to miss the point. Linda Evangelista and her fellow supermodels won’t get out of bed for less than ten grand a day. Meanwhile, teachers (the backbone of any successful society) make pocket change compared to these women. Or a skilled surgeon or the president. This disparity shows you what’s wrong with the world. We value people whose only claim to fame is the freakishly extraordinary arrangement of their DNA. Seriously, is it that hard to stand in front a wind machine in a swatch of material no bigger than a piece of toilet paper and suck in your cheeks?

-S on August 31st, 2010

Where is Yasmeen Ghauri??
She was a super model who was just as sought after as Niaomi, Claudia and Christy and continues to have cult followings on youtube and the world wide web. Is there some kind of law against including Muslims these days? Eesh grow up people, Miss USA is Muslim. I find Ghauri’s exclusion highly disappointing. And Elle was included though she wasn’t as popular as Niaomi, Claudia and Christy. Seems we’re still too caught up and trying to hold on to yesteryear interpretations of ‘diversity’ which were mainly black and white. They were changing in the 90′s but sadly, that reality has not been shown here.

-Jacob on September 5th, 2010

you’re all smoking crack. Cheryl Tiegs was the original supermodel
while these girls were still wearing braces in junior high!!!

-timothy on September 7th, 2010

Well, to be fair to everyone here, InStyle should never have used the term “original supermodels”.
Supermodels? Yes. Original? Definitely, no!

Alexa was right bringing up Twiggy; The Twig got (for the time period-the mid ’60s) HUGE media coverage, but it was “The Shrimp”, the beautiful Jean Shrimpton, a couple years earlier who really first carried the term “supermodel”.
Check her out; those eyes were dynamite.

Even Wikipedia, in their 1st paragraph, states, ” She was an icon of Swinging London and is considered to be one of the world’s first supermodels.”

-Beatles4Me on September 8th, 2010

Stop griping and sour graping, people.whether 80′s, 70′s, 90′s or whatever. Whether they suck in their cheeks or wont get out of bed for a million dollars, these ladies look great.I know it takes hard work to earn a fortune,it also takes hard work to look good.it takes no work to be a couch potato. These old gals look better than most of the younger generation because they work hard to stay looking good.

-Pru on September 8th, 2010

These ladies do look good, but I would, too, if I had time to go to a gym with a personal trainer, employ personal nutrionists, get plastic surgery, afford designer clothes. I look rough and tired because I work full-time outside the home AND am trying to care for an elderly mother “by myself” in my home AND am trying to keep the home up by myself with limited income. So, in all, I have 3 full-time jobs. No wonder I look bad compared to these ladies.

-Cheri on September 8th, 2010

@Cheri –

Sounds like you’re making a lot of excuses. We all work and have obligations at home. I make time to exercise and I eat right, also. Sounds like you’re too lazy to do the same.

-Dee on September 8th, 2010

Lots of talent and potential. Too bad more aren’t known for their generosity and philanthropy. Thanks to those that use their fame to help the less fortunate.

-Anne on September 8th, 2010

The girls were called supermodels because they made up to $80,000 for just one fashion show. Fashion press were known to not attend shows without these girls. Elle was famous because of Sports Illustrated, just like Christine Brinkley. Not so much for appearing in every major fashion show during fashion weeks. Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, and Kate Moss were equally sought after.

-bernie on September 8th, 2010

What ever happened to super-model Julie Woodson! She was a hot model in the 70′s and early 80′s. She is one of the few black models that did a Playboy spread in the 70′s and even starred in a movie. We would like to see her again and get an update. Thanks!

-Shelnelle on September 8th, 2010

Actually the “supermodel” term was pegged by Naomi , when she claimed that ,“We don’t wake up for less than $10,000 a day.”In the early 1980s, Inès de la Fressange was the first model to sign an exclusive modeling contract with an haute couture fashion house, Chanel.[50] During the early 1980s, fashion designers began advertising on television and billboards. Catwalk regulars like Gia Carangi,[51] Cheryl Tiegs,[51] Carol Alt, Christie Brinkley,[15][52] Kim Alexis,[51] Paulina Porizkova and Elle Macpherson began to endorse products with their names, as well as their faces, through the marketing of brands such as the beverage Diet Pepsi to the extension of car title Ford Trucks. As the models began to embrace old-style glamour, they were starting to replace film stars as symbols of luxury and wealth. In this regard, supermodels were viewed not so much as individuals but as images.[53]
1990′s
lthough many models were referred to as supermodels during this time, only the so-called “Big Six” were officially recognized and accepted by the fashion world as supermodels: Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell and Christy Turlington. They were the most heavily in demand, collectively dominating magazine covers, fashion runways, editorial pages, and both print and broadcast advertising

I’ve been browsing online more than three hours today, but I by no means discovered any fascinating article like yours. It is lovely price enough for me. In my view, if all webmasters and bloggers made good content as you probably did, the internet will probably be a lot more helpful than ever before.

certainly like your web site but you need to check the spelling on several of your posts. Many of them are rife with spelling problems and I in finding it very bothersome to tell the reality on the other hand I will certainly come back again.

-Athenos Greek Yogurt on July 18th, 2012

I agree with Jacob: Where is Yameen Ghauri?! She was the most beautiful supermodel of them all with her exotic looks and true supermodel figure…she was/is extraordinary looking whereas these gals would look ordinary off the catwalk sans a hair and makeup team.

-Rachel on February 21st, 2013

Don’t get me wrong I love all the supermodels but I thought Gia was the original one? True or not?
