Who is Rooney Mara?

Aug 17, 2010 @ 10:35 am

For months, industry insiders have been speculating about who would play Lisbeth Salander in the Hollywood adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s cult novel, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson and Kristen Stewart were all said to be in contention, but it’s relative unknown Rooney Mara who has scored the coveted role. Mara, the younger sister of Iron Man 2 star Kate Mara, will head to Sweden next week to begin filming the David Fincher-directed flick with British actor Daniel Craig, who will play Mikael Blomkvist. While you can count the actress’s film roles on one hand—she starred in A Nightmare on Elm Street and will have a supporting role in the upcoming Facebook film The Social Network—it turns out the NYU grad has been just as focused on bettering the lives of African orphans as she has been on building her career. After spending the summer of 2006 volunteering in Kenya, Mara founded Faces of Kibera, a non-profit dedicated to providing care and services to children in Africa’s second largest slum. We can’t wait to see Mara’s take on the complicated Salander!

Rick Owens: Master of Modernism

Aug 17, 2010 @ 10:00 am

The following is a guest post from one of our favorite online shopping destinations, Decadestwo.

Given fall’s minimal mood, we’ve turned to the master of modernism, Rick Owens, for inspiration. Known for his avant-garde aesthetic, the genius of Owens’ collections is that the pieces are wearable while still employing razor-sharp cuts, sleek draping and an architectural flair. Come fall, we can’t wait to cozy up in this plush cocoon jacket (size 4, $450) crafted with signature Rick Owens’ details like knit panels on the undersides of the sleeves. Owens’ looks are made to be layered and this cashmere silk blend tank dress with jersey trim (x-small, $340) begs to be thrown over a pair of trousers for a futuristic take on bohemia. Perhaps best known for his leather work, this black crinkled leather one shoulder bag ($660) is the prefect fall carryall. For more information or to purchase, please contact lizzy@decadestwo.com.

Our September Cover Girl Is… Hilary Swank!

Aug 17, 2010 @ 9:44 am

Life hasn’t always been easy for Hilary Swank, but giving up was never—and still isn’tan option. “People around me laugh because I still have a deep understanding of what a dollar gets you and how far to make that dollar go,” the two-time Oscar winner, who grew up in Bellingham, Wash. without much money, told us. “No wonder my closet is a hodgepodge. I have everything from Louboutins to Payless, from Gap to designer stuff. You don’t have to have a brand name on to be stylish. You can mix it all together and it works.” And her grounded attitude towards fashion reflects her personal life too. “A lot of people look at divorce as a failure. I really looked at my relationship with Chad [Lowe, her ex husband] as 14 years of success. I will carry him in my heart forever. He’s part of me,” she said. More
