This summer, as Grease returns to theaters in sing-a-long form (it’s being billed as “the original high school musical”), and the surprisingly unstoppable Step Up series releases its third installment (in 3-D, no less), it’s clear: Films that feature dance are bigger than ever. Accordingly, we’ve compiled a list of some of the best dance scenes ever shown on-screen. Click through to check out our favorites (including Funny Face, Flashdance, and Dirty Dancing, above) and be sure to vote for your favorite in the comments section below.

I love Audrey Hepburn but if any of you saw “Funny Face” she was not that great of a dancer. Seeing as “Dirty Dancing” was smack in the middle of my high school years and I was the target demographic–I have to vote hands down for that romantic finale!

What about the Tango in “Scent of a Woman”?

-Cheesehead on July 18th, 2010

Seriously….Gene Kelly in the street/rain scene…Singing In The Rain. Or Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, Donald O’Connor in the sofa/up the wall scene…also Singing In The Rain??? Y’all missed the boat

It’s amazing how some garbage slips in like stuff from “Step Up” and “Step Up II” while truly iconic scenes like the barn raising scene from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers are omitted. For even just sheer innovation, it blows most of the scenes listed away. Same as there were 2 dance scenes in “Singing in the Rain” that were tops..the one mentioned and “Make them Laugh”.

Fred Astaire and Leslie Caron did the GREATEST and most VIBRANT dancing together in their movie, Daddy Long Legs!!! She wore a bright red chiffon dress with a short, full skirt…….they outdid the college crowd at their big dance event in the film. Absolutely inspiring and thrilling!!! A MUST SEE!!!

Missing are tons of classics (“Oklahoma!”, “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers”), and what about these:
The dance scene from “Love At First Bite”
The Grand Central Station dance from “The Fisher King”
The subway number (“San Jose`”), the “Tango Maureen” and Angel’s entrance from “Rent”
Too many on the list are from the same, recent genre, but nice to get people thinking about and appreciating dance in all its forms!

Is everyone 30 or less? What about Gene Kelly (Singin in the Rain) and William Holden & Kim Novak in Picnic? (Gene Kelly – one of the greatest dancers in American history. William Holden & Kim Novak – one of the sexiest [without the need to be pornographic] dance routines in modern filmography.

-Lee on July 24th, 2010

My personal favorite dance scene is the scene with Kim Novak and Bill Holden in “Picnic” (1955) when they are dancing to Moonglow.

Also from “Singing’ in the Rain” was the very long number with Cyd Charisse. Which is right up there with the “An American in Paris” ballet.

The can-can number from “Moulin Rouge” was incredible, especially if you watched the DVD special features and got to see the entire number from each of the primary cameras. Wow!

-Mike on August 9th, 2010

Relatively brief but also quite memorable is the “Shall We Dance” number from “The King and I” with Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr.

-Bryan on August 9th, 2010

Ooooo…you forgot Danny Kaye and Vera Ellen dancing to “The Best Things Happen While You’re Dancing” in White Christmas.

-Jennifer on August 9th, 2010

I can’t believe you included only one of Fred Astaire’s movies, and not one of Gene Kelley’s! Come on, that’s ridiculous. The dance sequence with Gene Kelley, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds doing “Good Mornin”, alone should have been included.

Step up? Step Up II? Who picks these? Gene Kelly was amazing! One film not wildely seen is Summer Stock. Him and Judy Garland. There is an amazing dance off in a barn and then he has an amazing solo dance with a newspaper and squeeky floor boards. Also I believe in “It”s Always Fair Weather” he dances with a mop that is so unique and finally, I’m not sure of the film, but he dances in roller skates!!!! He is the KING!!!!!!

-Carrie on October 13th, 2011

And the roller skates is not in Xanado, there is one from the 50′s or 60′s. But considering how old he was at the time and still the amazing dances, what about Xanado?

-Carrie on October 13th, 2011

“Strictly Ballroom” (Australia) should have been #1 but will settle for last…the best anyway of them all…it will soon be made into a stage musical in Sydney, and then on to New York and London.

The two young stars, Tara Morice and Paul Mercurio, in their first film roles, absolutely sizzle in their dance sequences and in their quiet scenes together are sweet and romantic…

-MILDRED LEVINE on October 13th, 2011

i was such a relief to see someone post Kim Novak and Wm Holden in Picnic. and to not include Rogers/Astaire is nuts.

-davidthomasjohnson on October 13th, 2011

what about “White Knights” with Gregory Hines & Barishnakov? Great dance scenes.

-jovana on October 15th, 2011

I could watch all of the missing and mentioned dances all day long. Please do it again, including all of the great missing ones.

-Jane on October 16th, 2011

The lakeside scene from Picnic with Kim Novak and William Holden slow dancing deserves an honorable mention

-Lois on October 16th, 2011

love most of the dances mentioned, especially the barn raising scene. Gene Kelly in An American in Paris is really great, but the best dance number EVER was Fred Astaire dancing on the walls and ceiling in Royal Wedding!!!

-donna on October 17th, 2011

Gene Kelly–Singing in the Rain with the umbrella! AND with Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Connor dancing over the couch! AND Donald O’Connor number with the dummy! One of the best movies of all time.
