The iconic pink satin gown that Marilyn Monroe wore in the 1953 movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes—and which was famously copied by Madonna in the “Material Girl” video—was sold for an eye-popping sum of almost $312,000 at an auction in England this past weekend. That beats the nearly $276,000 that Princess Diana’s strapless black taffeta number brought in just last week, also at a London auction. It’s enough to make one wonder whether Marilyn’s gold-digging character, Lorelei, might be singing “Dresses Are A Girl’s Best Friend,” were she around today.
