Angelina Jolie is currently up to play Cleopatra in producer Scott Rudin’s Cleopatra: A Life. According to Rudin, the role “is being developed for and with Jolie.” We think Jolie’s smoldering good looks make her an ideal choice to play the Egyptian queen, whom Elizabeth Taylor first took in 1963. In that iteration, Taylor’s real-life love Richard Burton played Marc Antony. We can’t help but wonder if the producers have Brad Pitt in mind to take over the role for the remake. Do you think Pitt should play Marc Antony? Tell us in the comments below!

TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT. THERE’S PLENTY OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN FEMALE ACTORS THAT CAN PLAY THAT PART WELL, AND IT’S FITTING. LIZ TAYLOR DIDN’T FIT AND ANGELINA WON’T EITHER. FROM US BY US IS THE THEME HERE. IT’S TIME WHITE-WOOD REALLY GETS THE PICTURE!!!!!! HINT -HINT

-JOHN MCKINNEY on June 11th, 2010

What about Jlo’s hubby?

-Rick on June 11th, 2010

I slightly agree with John, but I still think Ang is a good fit. Unless you could get maybe someone say like Hallie, Vennesa Williams, and as bad as I dont want to say it, but maybe Trye Banks… She could really pull off that look. But either way it goes…egh…

-Manny on June 11th, 2010

I’d rather see Megan Fox play this role, if it’s beauty their looking for, I’d want to see Megan Fox plus she’s younger. No Brad Pitt, please.

-Valerie on June 11th, 2010

sur is perfect
what a nice new!

-ana chavez on June 11th, 2010

I hate to admit it, but Angelina would be a perfect Cleopatra. I also think that they could find an equally beautiful African-American woman to play her, too. I disagree with casting Brad Pitt, because there are other actors who would fit the part/look better. Please don’t cast him only because he’s her husband… Cast the man that would be best for the part based on looks AND talent please!

-Sarah on June 11th, 2010

Not Brad please, and I don’t think Angelina is ok for that part either

-nicky on June 11th, 2010

Cleopatra was a mix of different races. Her family had originally came from Macedonia with Alexander the Great, and when he died, one of his generals took over. Actually, she should have more of a Greek appearance and, despite the legends, she was not a great beauty. She was, however, incredibly intelligent.

-branwynne77 on June 11th, 2010

@branwynne77: Then Jennifer Aniston should play her ;)

-Trixie Firecracker on June 11th, 2010

It’ll be very nice if they will also consider other artists than Angelina…. there are many shapely women that would fit very nice in Cleopatra’s costumes…..the girl in 10,000 BC Camilla Belle looks good for this role too….. no offense but does Angelina’s big lips, long face , skinny bod and veined arms fit a Cleopatra role??? Brad and Pitt and Angie? aren’t people sick of seeing them too much from tabloids already and then even at the movies? I do remember Angie’s interview that she doesn’t go for married men and then admits the next they did it while the guy was married. she insulted mistresses by that line, that going after married guy is dirty, i believe.Brad Pitt is good looking but disappointing as a husband figure.left his wife and walked around the next with the woman he denied going out with.. Home wreckers and cheaters idolized around? juz making them rich while they stand for lies and cheating…

-chocoglide on June 11th, 2010

I think Angelina would be great in this role. She played the mother to opposite Colin Ferrill’s Alexander the Great … he sucked, the movie wasn’t much better, but she was mesmerizing as the ambitious Macedonian queen. She could nail this part She has the right look, the right intensity, and the ability to play the calculating intelligence needed to portray Cleopatra.

-beez on June 12th, 2010

NO,NO,No, on both !!!! I mean, don’t get me wrong, I like em’ both…just not in these types of movies….Besides H-wood, need to started making some fresh new movies. Movies nowa days, starting to get boring… If you need some ideas on some “Fresh New” movies, just ask me… Outkast3000 Out…

-Chris Martin on June 12th, 2010

ı thing jolie is a good choice being Cleopatra. but only jolie not brad pitt.because brangelina is everywhere ıts very boring. please use one of them.

-Sinem on June 12th, 2010

Not only should you be looking for a beautiful woman but you should be looking among the black women. It was outrageous when Elizabeth Taylor played the role of this queen of color in the 60′s, and it will be an egregious act for Jolie to play the role today. The message White America sent to the public, especially young black girls over 40 years ago, will be the same message sent today; Women of color are not good or pretty enough to be the QUeen.:0(.How about being historically correct this time

-Rev ERegina on June 12th, 2010

HOW ABOUT WE MAKE A MOVIE THAT IS ACTUALLY BASED ON ACTUAL FACTS. WE DON’T HAVE TO HAVE AFRICAN AMERICANS IN EVERYTHING TO JUST PLEASE CERTAIN PEOPLE. IF U DID THEN IT WOULDN’T BE A TRUE FACT DUH!! AFRICAN AMERICANS DON’T LOOK EGYPTIAN! O.K.!! I DON’T UNDERSTAND HOW PEOPLE MAKE THAT CONNECTION. DO U KNOW WHERE AFRICAN AMERICANS WERE DURING THIS TIME? IN AFRICA!!!! DUH!!!!DUH!!!! DUH!!!!

-janille on June 12th, 2010

Okay I agree that Angie is a beauty and could play the role very well. However, Brad could never pull off Marc! History tells that Queen Cleo was darker in color as well. It’s bad enough that schools are trying to wipe out the Holocaust and now Cleo played by another lighter version? Let’s be fair to everyone and look for one of the beautiful darker actresses this time. I am white but I rather see something more realistic than just to satisfy Hollywood.

-saucysadra on June 12th, 2010

Cleopatra was Black. Jeeees

-Yaiyo on June 12th, 2010

OK people get your facts straight. Cleopatra was Ptolemaic, a kingdom which followed Alexander’s conquest and reigned up til the Roman conquest and as such she was light skinned. Nefertiti however was a NUBIAN (black) princess known for her beauty. It might help if you did your research before spouting off. The comments that I have read really show the problem with this world today — people think that they are smarter than they really are.

-Dara on June 12th, 2010

I love Angelina Jolie! But, I am really shocked that she has been casted as Cleopatra. Cleopatra was a woman of color. I remember when I was a little girl, and I watch Cleopatra staring Elizabeth Taylor. Wow, I was shocked a Caucasian women as Cleopatra. I wonderful why Hollywood cast Caucasian actors in ethnic roles? There are tons female actors women of color that could have been cast for the role of Cleopatra. Moses was played by Charleston Heston in “The 10 Commandments”, Jesus was played by Robert Powell in “Jesus of of Nazareth. These roles should have been men of color cast for these roles. History can’t be changed!

-Pat on June 12th, 2010

Let’s send Janille back to school — graduate school perhaps. Her statement amazes me, to say the least. Cleopatra was a woman of COLOR, period. Angeline Jolie is not a woman of color — more so a woman of excellent plastic surgery. Halle Berry and other actresses that are similar (i.e. Zoe Saldana, Aishwarya Rai) would be better choices. Caucasian women in Egypt are not native women — they are women of colonial occupation and oppression.

Let’s reveal a true story for once … not a Euro-trapped story …

-Amber on June 12th, 2010

-janille honey Egypt is in Africa, northern Africa. DUH!!!!

-Pat on June 12th, 2010

Elizabeth Taylor wasn’t married to Richard Burton when they made Cleopatra. They met on the first day of production and both were married to other people.

-Doug on June 13th, 2010

I can’t believe that some poster didn’t know that Egypt is in Africa. Get your facts straight duh…

-Anita on June 13th, 2010

I think it sounds okay but definitely have to agree with everyone, Egypt is in Africa so why not a african american actress and actor? It would make complete sense… Besides, this isn’t the 50′s and 60′s anymore we do have outstanding african american actors in film now, 2010!!!

-Maria on June 13th, 2010

She was a Ptolemy, people. Her people came from Macedonia when Alex the Great conquered Egypt. Please read up on your history. She had a mix of different races in her and if you happen to see a coin with her likeness on it, she most certainly does NOT look African, at least not completely. Her dark skin could well have been because she lived in a country that has a lot of sun.

-branwynne77 on June 13th, 2010

Some of the sculptures of famous egyptian queens made during thier lifetime had blue eyes and pale skin. Black wigs were simply in style. The royalty in egypt had a mixture of ethnicities in them due to peace marriages (and concubine gifts) made between the surrounding countries. Inbreeding within the royals also perpetuated recessive genes. Cleopatra was probably olive skinned, much like our Angelina Jolie.

-Leigh on June 13th, 2010

In fact nobody knows what race she was…so any person could play her…all you get your facts straight….Angelina would be perfect!!!!

-Lisa on June 13th, 2010

I like Angi but she doesn t have the fitures, for Cleo. Deffinetly a darker colored actress, olive complection. more like the Kardations look,.

-sadheart on June 13th, 2010

Janille,

Please grow a brain. Egypt is in Africa, so Americans of African descent could have come from any country on the African continent. And for all of you who continue this B##SH!T of parsing who was Pheonecian and who was Nubian, just know that Africans come in all colors, hues and complexions. Whether she was lighter skinned or mocha or dark and lovely, the key is that Cleopatra has been historically, anthropologically identified in the context of the rich history of the African diaspora. Black people ruled Egypt, and only in America can we find those who absurdly insist on defining beauty by European standards.

-estudia on June 13th, 2010

Gerard butler would make a great male lead. God not Angelina Jolie! Why? Someone more exotic and not so over published…completely used up. A lot of people wouldn’t go because it is Angelina.

-mallar1119@yahoo.com on June 13th, 2010

Being from Egypt country, Cleopatra had macedonian decent;fair complected, she was not beautiful and if you can see pictures of coins Egyptian you will see her features…nose large, etc. i don’t understand west’s fascination with her, since all the films produce unaccurately describe her.

-yousra on June 13th, 2010

I want to claify, I am from Egypt…Egypt is full of light, dark complected people. you should research egypt, not based on american perception

-yousra on June 13th, 2010

Ok, based on what I have read in my past, Cleopatra was born to Ptolemy XII and Cleopatra V. Now you have to take something into consideration: Ptolemy was descendant to Alexander’s General Ptolemy I. He was Macedonian Greek. Cleopatra V was of Egyptian and Macedonian Greek Descent. Cleopatra is described not fair in complexion. And my opinions on Jolie playing her is this: I don’t agree with it, but if she lands the role, AND if the movie follows EXACTLY to what history describes, I feel sorry for her.

Because she’ll have to learn phrases from the Ancient Egyptian, Ethiopian, Classical Roman Latin, Greek, Syrian, and Arabic. Those were the languages Cleopatra learned to speak. ANd as for Brad Pitt, I DON’T See him playing Marc Antony. But we all know Hollywood, like Disney, doesn’t follow literature OR history to an exact point.

-Samantha on June 13th, 2010

First, the comment about the first comment. At the time of Cleopatra, Egyptian women were light skinned. They didn’t look like the modern African women from Nigeria or Ghana. Even today, Egyptian women don’t look like African women, so let’s not mix political correctness with the facts of history.
I had tears of joy when I heard that Angelina will play Cleopatra. And casting Brad P. as Mark Anthony, the best casting of the last decade of Hollywood.
Can’t wait to see the movie. I am so excited.

-Andre on June 14th, 2010

I think that Angelina would be great for this role. We may like her or not, but she is a very good actress. I believe she would look amazing as Cleo. As far as Brad, may be he can play Caesar, he already played Achilles, so that should be easy for him. He is a wonderful actor as well and he is a very very gorgeous man. I would love to see the movie. As far as your correctness for the history, you can find it on History Channel, not in Hollywood.

-Alicia on June 14th, 2010

No, Elizabeth Taylor was fabulous! Angelina and should i say Brangelina would just be over kill!

-Katie on June 15th, 2010

um for the person saying that an African american should play the role, I apologize, but you need to check your history books, Egyptians (although from Africa) are not black. Ethnic wise they are Caucasian (same as Libyans, Moroccans, Tunisians, etc…). Although some Egyptians can be dark skinned, they are dark skinned like an Italian is for example, not dark skinned as in black. There is no evidence whatsoever that Cleopatra was black.

-reallyno on June 15th, 2010

Personally I wold like to see in this role Camille Belle….she is a very pretty woman…

-Elisa on June 15th, 2010

I actually think this is one film that should not be remade. Elizabeth Taylor made this such an iconic role that it really should be left alone. BTW, Cleopatra and her family were of Macedonian Greek descent, so I don’t think there’s anything wrong with someone other than an African-American actress playing the part….just saying…

-Chavonne on June 15th, 2010

I think Angie is a great choice. Brad is a ok choice but I agree with Sarah because its other actors out there that would be a better pick to play the love interest. And to all the people that says that Megan Fox is younger and she should be a better pick, you need to take a look in the mirror then you will realize everything(includiing yourself) gets older. Talent comes before beauty in the directors eyes. Thats whats wrong with Hollywood right now. Everyone wants to look young. As long as you age gracefully, it shouldnt matter whos the younger person in the business. It’s always gonna be a younger person coming behind you. Just do what you do(like Angie is doing) and people will still recognize your talent.

-chantechante on June 16th, 2010

ANGELINA IS PERFERCT FOR THE PART OF CLEOPATRA, WHY DIDN’T SOMEONE THINK OF THIS SOONER? WHAT IS SAD IS, HOW AMERICANS ESPECIALLY IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY, LACKS KNOWLEDGE OF GEOGRAPHY AND HISTORY, NOT TO BE INSULTIVE OR RUDE BUT WE THE PEOPLE OF THE BLACK COMMUNITY RELY MORE ON RUMOR THAN ON FACTS, HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY. CLEOPATRA WAS NOT BLACK NOT FROM THE FEW ETCHINGS I HAVE SEEN TO TELL THE TRUTH SHE LOOKED MORE LIKE LADY GAGA AND THAT OTHER SINGER FROM ENGLAND THAT IS ALWAYS IN TROUBLE WITH DRUGS.. BUT JOLIE DOES HAVE THE PERSONALITY & TEMPERIMENT, HALLE COULD ALSO BE A GREAT CLEOPATRA BUT LET’S BE HONEST SHE DOES NOT POSSESS THE PERSONALITY NOR ACTING SKILLS FOR THE PART. ANGIE IS PERFECT, HOPE I WILL GET TO SEE THE MOVIE!!!!

-dvalery206 on June 16th, 2010

Angelina is my favorite! But I kind of think they should maybe have an egyptian looking person play the part.

-C on June 17th, 2010

Cleopatra was a woman of color. Unfortunately for those attempting to build up a rather lackluster history in empire creation and/or historical significance, Cleopatra’s color was white. Probably whiter than today’s Greeks, because she was the product of 7 generations of Greeks before the Ottoman Turks entered Greece. Sorry if that offends, I’m sure we can find some discredited books or articles so that we can pretend she was black. Or, maybe you meant that Cleo that advertises for the Psychic Network. Then, you’re right.

-melanie on June 17th, 2010

Hey, whatchoo talkin’ about, Willis? Cleopatra was black, drank grape soda, watched Jerry Springer and liked rap music. Stop stealin’ our history, man. REPRESENT!!!

-chilaxia on June 17th, 2010

Hey John McKinney…There are many Egyptians who are of color but unfortunately, Cleopatra was not. Cleopatra was the daughter of puppet pharaoh controlled by the Romans. He was not a native egyptian and neither was his daughter. Cleopatra and her entire line were Europeans…so having an actress of color play her role would not work.
If african americans would like to claim someone as representative of their heritage, cleopatra is not the one. she was not the glamorous figure hollywood has made her out to be. her roman puppet family was not fighting the caesar to obtain freedom for their egyptian subjects; they were fighting for power, money and control. before you shoot your mouth off about something, read a book.
