Get Michelle Obama’s Summer Style at Gap Prices

Jun 3, 2010 @ 3:20 pm

Love the full-skirted Sophie Theallet dress that Michelle Obama wore to Ghana in 2009 (inset)? A similar design can now be purchased at Gap’s newly-launched N.Y.C. concept store (dedicated to CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winners). For the limited-edition pop-up, which also stocks accessories by Monique Pean and menswear by Patrik Ervell, Theallet created a near-copy of Mrs. Obama’s breezy dress—the color of the skirt’s stripes and the lightweight cotton fabric are among the differences from the original—in both white and black for a more accessible $248.  Fans of Theallet’s feminine touches will also appreciate her other wallet-friendly Gap creations: a summer-ready ruffle-front dress ($248), a tie-front blouse ($148) and a tiered skirt ($198).

Golden Girl Rue McClanahan: Dead at 76

Jun 3, 2010 @ 2:03 pm

Rue McClanahan, best known for playing saucy southern belle Blanche Devereaux on The Golden Girls, passed away today at the age of 76. The Oklahoma native began her career in theater where she starred in the Off Broadway show The Golden Fleece. After catching the eye of legendary TV producer Norman Lear, McClanahan was cast as a guest star on All in the Family as well as its spinoff, Maude, where she first shared the screen with future Golden Girls costar Bea Arthur. In 1985, the two actresses joined Betty White and Estelle Getty as the Golden Girls, the funny foursome who proved that good humor is the secret to aging gracefully. McClanahan won an Emmy for her role as Blanche and continued to star in series such as Law & Order and Murphy Brown. See McClanahan’s transformation through the years and check out a clip of our favorite Blanche Devereaux moment after the jump and share your favorite scenes in the comments section below.

Rachel Zoe Collaborates With Brian Atwood

Jun 3, 2010 @ 12:21 pm

Rachel Zoe is parlaying her passion for fabulous footwear and friends into a sexy shoe collaboration with Brian Atwood: “Brian’s been one of my best friends for fifteen years!” she told us at last night’s Dinner With a Designer Celebrating Brian Atwood, hosted by InStyle and the CFDA. “We met dancing on a table in Paris when we were both starting out in our careers.” Zoe and Atwood designed an over-the-knee platform boot with chain detail. The black and suede boot ($2,915) hits stores this June and you can expect the boot to be a staple on the red carpet this fall. “Every single one of my clients wear Brian Atwood. He makes the most beautiful shoes. I am his number one cheerleader!”

Ivanka Trump Announces New Handbag Line

Jun 3, 2010 @ 11:58 am

It’s been a busy year for Ivanka Trump: In addition to pitching in at her father’s world-famous company—and, of course, appearing on his show—the budding accessories mogul has expanded her fine jewelry collection, signed a deal to create a line of shoes and, today, announced plans to collaborate with Mondani on series of handbags that will hit stores next spring. “I just signed a huge handbag deal…very exciting!” Trump tweeted. “Come next spring you can own Ivanka Trump shoes and bags in addition to my jewelry!” But the newlywed doesn’t see fashion, television and even real estate as separate pursuits: ”My overall goal is that every consumer will have the opportunity to grow with the Trump brand, from the purchase of Ivanka Trump shoes and accessories to ultimately staying in Trump hotels, playing our golf courses, and living in our condominium buildings,” she told WWD.

Victoria Beckham Fetes Brian Atwood Wearing Her New Suit Collection

Jun 3, 2010 @ 11:09 am

Lately Victoria Beckham has traded her favorite day dresses in for tailored suits on the red carpet, and now we’ve got the inside scoop on why:  “I’ve started a capsule collection of tailoring. This is one of my suits,” she told us at last night’s Dinner With a Designer Celebrating Brian Atwood, hosted by InStyle and the Council of Fashion Designers of America. “I always design things that I love and I’ve been obsessed with tailoring—I love a great jacket.” While Beckham admits the work is challenging, she’s having a blast: “Coming from London, I looked at Savile Row with stars in my eyes. And so I worked with a men’s tailor in Savile Row.  [Tailoring] is about structure, getting the right shoulder and right waist. Everything is handmade and super flattering. It’s been a tricky thing to do, but a lot of fun.” No word on when the sure-to-be hot suits will hit stores though: “I haven’t figured out how I am going to launch it as of yet.”

The Limited Introduces Wedding Gowns

Jun 3, 2010 @ 11:00 am

Budget-minded brides have yet another new option now that the The Limited has introduced its first-ever collection of wedding gowns. For now, brides have two full-length styles to choose from for their big day. The “romantic” style boasts an empire waist, ivory satin sash and a cascade of chiffon ruffles (left); the “elegant” gown features a sweet-heart neckline, pockets and a skinny belt (right). Both are being sold at an amazing (for bridal) price: only $298. Given that Hollywood stars like Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Lopez have lately been donning long, white gowns on the red carpet, we wouldn’t be surprised to see some particularly fashion-savvy shoppers decide to skip the aisle and choose these dresses for other formal events. (Please, just don’t wear one to someone else’s wedding.)
