Ladylike Chic at Louis Vuitton Store Launch

May 26, 2010 @ 11:18 am

Elle Macpherson and Gwyneth Paltrow were among the stylish stars at the opening of Louis Vuitton’s Bond Street Maison in London last night. The Australian supermodel opted for a short white shift from Vuitton’s Cruise 2010 collection, which she paired with black satin slingbacks, while the actress chose a tweed keyhole dress from the Cruise 2011 collection, which she paired with feathered peep-toe booties on the red carpet before switching to pink satin pumps for the party (such are the benefits of celebrating in a store). Thandie Newton, Gemma Arterton, Alexa Chung and Kirsten Dunst also made their way through the luxurious tri-level boutique whilst decked out in Vuitton’s latest 1950′s-inspired frocks. The French fashion house’s creative director, Marc Jacobs, summed up the store, and the scene, best: “It’s a monument to luxury and visual stimulation,” he told Vogue UK. “It just goes on and on.”

See more of the stars from last night’s chic events, including Vanessa Hudgens and Michelle Trachtenberg!

Five Chic Summer Updates!

May 25, 2010 @ 1:18 pm

The following is a guest post from one of our favorite shopping destinations, Decadestwo.

Decadestwo co-owner Christos Garkinos‘s keen eye and sophisticated sense of style come in handy when it comes time to update your warm-weather wardrobe. With temperatures on the rise, he’s given his top five picks for transitioning from spring to summer exclusively for InStyle.com readers.

1. This Chanel garden party dress from the Spring 2009 collection (far left, size 40 and priced at $2000) is crafted with fabulous deco details, such as pleating at the bodice and a black and pink color palette.

2. We’re always on the hunt for pieces on their way back around. Floral sheaths, like this Dolce & Gabbana watercolor print dress (near left, size 38 and priced at $550), were hot in the 90s—at the time you may have paired it with grunge-style combat boots. Today, the slip-inspired dress has grown up and so have we. More

Watch Rihanna’s “Rockstar 101″ Video

May 25, 2010 @ 12:25 pm

The ever-experimental Rihanna gave an object lesson in edgy style in her new video for “Rockstar 101.” At the start of the black-and-white clip, the singer appears in a very slinky chained number paired with a spiked headpiece; from there, she transitions to leopard-print leggings,  a white jacket with metal accents at the shoulders, and a patent leather catsuit with gigantic puffed sleeves. Finally, Ri-Ri paid homage to ex-Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash, who contributed a rocking guitar solo to the song, by dressing as him, complete with curly wig and hat. Check out the video above.

Gwen Stefani’s Rocker Chic New ‘Do

May 25, 2010 @ 10:41 am

Gwen Stefani traded in her shoulder-length waves for an edgy new fringed lob (beauty editor speak for long bob). While the statement bangs and choppy layers are new, the pop star/fashion designer stayed true to her signature platinum hue and trademark red lips. Stefani’s longtime hairstylist Danilo dished that this updated look is all a part of the mother of two’s constantly evolving style. “Gwen is an ever-changing beauty. The straight chop is just another aspect of her representing her individuality,” Danilo told us. “Gwen marches to her own beauty beat—bangs today, gone tomorrow.”

SATC2 Premiere: Amazing Fashion!

May 25, 2010 @ 10:01 am

At last night’s premiere of Sex and the City 2 at Radio City Musical Hall in New York City, the only thing more exciting than seeing the new film was watching the live red carpet fashion show courtesy of our favorite foursome. Sarah Jessica Parker got cozy with the enthusiastic crowd, signing autographs and posing with fans in a bold fluorescent yellow Valentino Couture gown. Kristin Davis looked stunning in a bright pink Jean Desses vintage gown from Decades. Cynthia Nixon looked simply elegant in a black strapless Carolina Herrera gown, while Kim Cattrall opted for classic Hollywood glamour in a body-skimming gold gown by Naeem Khan. Check out our photo gallery for more gorgeous shots of the girls, plus see what other stylish stars wore to the premiere of the year!

Glee‘s Costumer Dishes On Gaga Looks

Glee‘s long-awaited Lady Gaga episode is finally upon us, and while we’re looking forward to singing along with New Directions’ versions of “Bad Romance” and “Poker Face” tomorrow night, we’re even more psyched to see how they interpret Gaga’s inimitable style. Luckily, we were able to convince costumer Lou Eyrich to give us the inside scoop. “I have great respect for Lady Gaga,” she told us. “This episode is a tribute to her genius. The costumes are not replicas; we wanted it look like the kids made them.‘” So that’s exactly what they did: “Rachel (Lea Michele) wears two outfits. The first inspired by Gaga’s Kermit the Frog dress: She goes through her stuffed animals at home and staples all of them to her dress. The second is like the dress Gaga wore with the big silver mirrored triangle.” Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) was hand-picked by creator Ryan Murphy to wear the famous bubble dress. “It was really heavy,” Eyrich reported, “and it made a lot of noise. We turned it into a vest so that it would be easier to take on and off, because there was no sitting down in it.” While Eyrich wanted to each re-interpretation to have its own homemade  spin, she strove for authenticity when it came time to copy Alexander McQueen’s 10-inch ‘Armadillo’ platforms. “I’m a huge McQueen fan so I wanted to do them justice,” she said. “We tried to buy them” for Kurt (Chris Colfer), “but we would have needed a woman’s size 13. They don’t make them that big.” More

J. Crew Perfects The Beach Tote

May 24, 2010 @ 1:53 pm

We’re pretty much obsessed with anything that’s both chic and technical for summer (think: boat shoes that can be worn while sailing and shopping, cargos that work for hiking and hitting the town). Now, thanks to J.Crew, we can buy a beach bag that’s fit for a double life, too. The retailer has teamed up with Angela Adams—an artist and designer known for her ruggedly beautiful housewares and handbags, shaped by her upbringing on the coast of Maine—to create three brightly-colored totes “inspired by our combined love of summer and the ocean.” The bags are constructed from recycled boat sails, some of which have been around the world, and they’re completely water-resistant—durable enough to withstand sun and sand, but stylish enough for lunch on the dock. The bag retails for $198 and is available at jcrew.com.
