Twenty years ago, Vera Wang opened a small bridal boutique on Madison Avenue and now her name is synonymous with wedding gowns. At a retrospective exhibit of some of her most memorable gowns, Wang weighed in on the past two decades of bridal bliss: “These [gowns] feel like old friends!” she said happily as she viewed her life’s work from a white perforated leather gown to variations on her signature tulle creations. “Working with celebrities, whether they are movie stars, rock stars or personalities, is always a great learning lesson—no two are the same! My favorite bride was Jennifer Lopez. Her gown took more than eight months [to make] and truthfully we made three for her because she couldn’t decide which mood she wanted to be,” divulged Wang. “More recently, I love the gown Ivanka Trump chose because she went old-fashioned. There was something so fresh and new about the fact that she didn’t want to dress trendy and sexy, but wanted to evoke the style of Grace Kelly.” But with thousands of gowns under her belt, Wang must-have gone rogue at some point: “I did design a black wedding gown once. It had all the details I love and use, but was completely black—no bride has ever ordered it!” Click on the gallery to see some of her most-famous brides over the years and check out her newest collection of dream-worthy wedding gowns.
