Lauren Bush’s New FEED Bag

May 7, 2010 @ 2:32 pm

With summer rapidly approaching there couldn’t have been a better time for FEED Projects founders Lauren Bush and Ellen Gustafson to launch their newest bag benefiting Guatemala—the multi-colored charitable totes are perfect for weekend jaunts! “FEED had been very monotone—we wanted to do something fun and colorful for the summer,” said Gustafson at the bag’s Lord & Taylor launch. The pair partnered with the organization Nest to hire Guatemalan artisans to create the beautiful fabrics used for the bags, which come in two sizes, FEED 3 ($39) and FEED 1 ($19). They also spoke passionately about their desire to change the lives of the children in Guatemala. “Kids are chronically malnourished—you can physically see it because they have stunted growths,” Bush told us.  Proceeds of the bags’ sales go towards U.S Fund for UNICEF’s program to add micronutrients to children’s food.  Purchase the covetable summer tote and help the cause at Feedprojects.org.

Hair and Hoisery Clean Up the Gulf of Mexico

May 7, 2010 @ 2:30 pm

One innovative nonprofit has an oddly stylish solution to help with the spreading oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico: using an unlikely pairing to clean it up—hair and hosiery! Since 1998, Matter of Trust has been collecting donations of oil-absorbing human hair and animal fur to clean up after the thousands of oil spills that happen each year. The hair and fur donations are made into mats and booms, which use old nylon stockings to keep clippings together. To help, volunteers in the Gulf region are hosting “Boom-B-Q’s” (boom-making parties), and over 300,000 salons in the U.S. are donating hair clippings to the nonprofit’s hair-collecting program, which means you might already be part of this great cause every time you get you get a trim. But Matter of Trust still needs help. “We now need the costly mesh used to carry the boons across the beaches,” says Lisa Gautier, President of Matter of Trust. That’s why Gautier and her husband are encouraging cash contributions, with a promise to personally match monetary donations dollar-for-dollar up to $50,000. “This movement is better than we ever imagined, but we still need the funds to transport the booms,” Gautier said. “The volunteers at the Boom-B-Q’s would be very grateful!” Watch the video above to learn more about the program and visit matteroftrust.org/contribute to donate via Paypal.

Colorful Advice from Chris Benz and Nathan Turner

May 7, 2010 @ 12:28 pm

Last week Chris Benz hosted an L.A. soiree to celebrate his Fall 2010 collection, but the designer also offered some timely advice for those of us looking to amp up our spring wardrobe. “The key piece is definitely a colorful shift dress. Throw a jean jacket over it and wear it all day, then put on heels and a necklace and it’s perfect for night,” said Benz, whose colorful creations have been worn by Eva Mendes and Gwyneth Paltrow. “It’s all about exuberance, youth and fun!” Interior designer Nathan Turner, who hosted Benz’s party at his West Hollywood boutique, shared his quick tips for brightening up a living space. “Accents like lampshades and pillows are the key. I was just in Ikea and saw these red picture frames, you could do a whole wall of those,” the decorator brainstormed. “And paint is the easiest way to totally transform a space. It’s inexpensive and it’s a day’s work. If I see one more beige room, I’m going to throw myself out a window!”

Lady Gaga Shares The Queen’s Taste in Undergarments

May 7, 2010 @ 12:15 pm

Lady Gaga and Queen Elizabeth II both have a penchant for ornate headgear (Her Majesty favors tiaras and crowns; the Lady opts for telephones and Muppets) and now it seems that they share the same taste in lingerie. The international fashion press is abuzz over news that Gaga has yet to return several corsets borrowed from Rigby & Peller, official Corsetieres to H.M. Queen Elizabeth since 1960. The handmade silk-and-lace basques—with their padded hips that give wearers a structured, tulip-shaped silhouette—were due back Thursday for the line’s Autumn/Winter 2010 runway presentation in London, but didn’t arrive in time. We aren’t taking sides in this style standoff, but if we were in possession of a foundation garment so good it’s fit for a queen, we’d probably have a hard time giving it back too!
