In honor of  Rialto Pictures’ 50th anniversary re-release of Breathless, Jean-Luc Godard’s film noir starring Jean-Paul Belmondo as a petty thief and the incredibly cool Jean Seberg as an American journalist in Paris, Rodarte has created two limited-edition T-shirts. The first is based on the New York Herald Tribune T-shirt Seberg wore in the film and the other an original design inspired by the French New Wave film’s overall style. “[Godard] is a renegade. In Breathless, he broke all the rules and formulas,” said Laura Mulleavy, one half of the designer duo. “We have been influenced by Godard’s rejection of the status quo and have approached our work with the same desire.” The sisters are also designing a new poster for the film’s release and will be creating window displays for Barney’s New York, where the shirts will be sold. The restored film hits theaters May 28th .

“Breathless” is not a film noir. It’s considered to be a part of the French New Wave cinema. And the Seberg character is not a journalist. She sells newspapers on the street.

Well said Gracie. If you are going to pay tribute to a classic, get your facts right. Be truly authentic, watch the film, don’t just “by the t-shirt”.

When will the shirts go on sale? Will they be on sale on the Barneys website?

HEY GRACIE, yes, she IS a journalist. Why do you think she conducts an interview in the middle of the film and meets with her editor for lunch? And Godard was goofing on classic film noirs (the MILLION REFERENCES to Bogart!), so in that regard, yes, it kind of IS noir-y! Good DAY!
