In 1981, Princess Diana wore a black strapless gown for her first appearance as the Princess of Wales—and thus kick-started an international obsession as the most stylish, fascinating Princess the world had ever seen. The taffeta dress, earning her the title “Daring Di” for its shoulder-baring cut, was thought to have been lost for the last 19 years. Not so: The designers Elizabeth and David Emanuel announced yesterday that their creation had been with them all along. The Princess had simply dropped it off with them to be altered. “[When we designed the dress], we hadn’t considered the fact that when Diana bent over—as she would have to do when getting out of the car—she would show quite a lot of cleavage. We just thought she looked fabulous,” Miss Emanuel recalled to the Daily Mail. The lost gown—which is expected to go for over $100,000—will be auctioned off on June 8th at Kerry Taylor Auctions.

This photo shows Diana as Lady Diana Spencer. She didn’t become HRH Diana Princess of Wales until her marriage.

That dress she is wearing was the first time she had an official date with Prince Charles. He complained about the dress showing her cleavage when she got out of the car. Later on the evening, Princess Grace took her aside and told her that it would only get worse, to be prepared. She never wore the dress again.

And why is this just now coming out that these two designers had the dress? Diana has been dead for 12.5 years. I remember that at the time people commented that she was “busty” and rather plump. My have times changed. I think she looks stunning!

OMG – Can you IMAGINE owning that dress? Diana Spencer first danced onto the international stage nearly 30 years ago as a green 19-year old & even tho she died tragically & unnecessarily more than 10 years ago, there are many of us who still admire her. She made so many minor mistakes the night she wore this dress – wearing black, the cleavage, getting out of the car head- instead of feet-first, a daytime trenchcoat – it just made her human. And so relatable & loveable.

If the Emanuel’s had the dress “to be altered,” why did they not do that work & return the dress to the Princess? I’m sure she would have paid them. Over the years she had many couture items reworked into new outfits so they could be worn again – she was a master at recycling. As such a visible woman, she would have been criticized for repeating an outfit to an opening or a benefit event. But if the dress was reworked into a new design, then its not exactly wearing the same thing again.

And why are the Emanuel’s selling this dress now? In 2006 they published a book about the making of Diana’s wedding dress. I wonder – is this dress really their property? Did she gift it back to them, or did she only borrow it (highly unlikely). Maybe it was willed to them. Perhaps they’ll donate the proceeds to one of her favourite charities.

Susan, the Emanuels could not alter the dress to fit her smaller frame, so they created a whole new dress for her. I believe they held onto the dress I believe because she didn’t have any need for it after she had the new one they made in the smaller size. I read an article in the Daily Mail about it a couple of days ago.
