We were saddened to hear that Designing Women star Dixie Carter passed away on Saturday at age 70. Her memorable character, the tough-but-sweet Southern belle Julia Sugarbaker, still stands as inspiration for strong, opinionated women everywhere and our favorite clip proves it. In her famous “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia” speech, Julia defended her sister Suzanne (played by the lovely Delta Burke) from a snooty pageant queen by unleashing a fury that’s pretty hard to beat. Enjoy the classic scene and share your favorite Dixie Carter moments in the comments section below!

I loved the episode when some catty beauty queen was talking about Suzanne’s talent as “throwing a baton” in the air and catching it. Julia was in the room and went off on the woman (in a classy way) and ended her speech with “and that is the night the lights went out in Georgia”. Dixie Carter was one classy woman.

I loved it when the crew would do something goofy and Julia would exclaim, “HAVE you all COMPLETELY lost your minds??” Very funny lady.

I loved the episode where she went off on a sleazy guy in a bar, and he turned out to be the IRS agent who would be auditing her taxes! How about the one where Julia’s house was part of an historical tour, and she went off on the flip-flop-wearing tourists! And when she was in “Filthy Rich!” I could go on and on and on and on. I think I will: how about the episode where Julia gets her head stuck in hand-carved antique staircase in the governor’s mansion! Oh how this terrific lady will be missed!!!

I recall one of my favorite episodes of “Desiging Women” was the one where Julia and Reese broke up and he brought a woman from his law firm to a benefit both Julia and him were attending. The woman told Julia she wanted to be friends with her and also had every intention of sleeping with Reese to get ahead at work. I love Julia’s response “When I was a child I lived on a farm and they used to stack and package compost. I have seen a lot of compost, though In all my days I have never seen compost tied and packaged in such a pretty package like you.”
Oh Julia was the queen of class. And I used to love when they’d let Dixie sing on the show. I thank her for sharing her magic with the world, and showing all of us to have a little class.

I am fond of when she was helping Mary Jo at the fast food joint. And the time she woke up after her son’s wedding reception in a strange bed, wearing nothing but some frat boy’s football jersey…and the sheer panic on her face. The character never lost her dignity, and Dixie Carter was completely elegant.

Every single time she spoke is my favorite moment. I always thought that if GOD blessed me with a daughter that her name would be Julia. I ended up with all boys, but I know one of them will bless me with a Julia when the time comes.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dixie and Hal at the Kentucky Derby several years ago when the tv show was at its peak and watched as people would ask her to sign anything from a napkin to a derby hat an not turning anyone away and it didnt matter if they were on millionair row or from the infield what a class act that no one will be able to follow Ms. Carter put the ‘Dixie’ in the south ,she will be missed RIP
