Wouldn’t it be lovely if someone remade the classic musical My Fair Lady with a fresh face—say, Carey Mulligan—in the role of Eliza Dolittle? Our wishes may have been granted: Emma Thompson told BBC News that she is writing a remake with Mulligan set to play the iconic Cockney flower girl. The young British actress made a splash this year for her role in An Education, garnering an Oscar nomination and comparisons to Audrey Hepburn, who played Eliza in the 1964 original. The role of Dolittle’s mentor, Henry Higgins, has yet to be cast, but Thompson has another Brit in mind. “I love Hugh Grant so I’d love him to do it,” she said to BBC News.  We love the idea of Grant and Mulligan singing “The Rain in Spain” not to mention the fabulous fashion moments as Dolittle makes her transformation. When can we expect the sure-to-be dazzling remake? “Hopefully…later this year,” said Thompson.

are you KIDDING me?? they’re seriously going to remake My Fair Lady?? I thought they’d given up on that idea knowing it was blasphemy. Yeah, let’s go remake a movie with EIGHT oscars, because clearly it wasn’t good enough the first time around. It’s not an iconic piece of film history or anything, let’s just make a new one.
idiots.

-Emma on March 26th, 2010

they shouldn’t remake my fair lady. out of all the audrey movies, why this one? i agree with emma. if it won eight oscars the first time, you’d think we’d give it up. yeesh.

-ghee on March 26th, 2010

Do we have no new ideas for movies anymore? I think it is an incredibly stupid idea to recreate an iconic movie. Leave the original alone!

-Nicole on March 26th, 2010

With Emma Thompson on board creatively, there’s bound to be a compelling and award-winning film on the other end of the argument.

Nothing remotely reminiscent of Audrey about this girl Carrie Mulligan–her look and demeanor are so unappealingly average, bland, and dull, and she looks old/has a 40-something face. Audrey exuded unique/non-average beauty and youth. Carrie Mulligan looks far too average and old (no matter how young she is) to deign to recapture even so much as an intimation of Audrey Hepburn’s essential and characteristic nature.

No the remake of such a classic film is wrong even if carey sort of has the Doolittle look it should just not happen

She would be perfect.

Julie Andrews played Eliza on Broadway and actually did her own singing. She has been blond. I do love Audrey Hepburn and the original is in my huge library of classic films. Why do a remake? I agree with most of you who said, “No.” I don’t think that I will even go see it. I like Emma Thompson and yes, Hugh Grant would probably be a good choice for Henry Higgins, maybe. The script for My Fair Lady is almost word for word “Pygmalion” by George Bernard Shaw. Lerner, I think wrote the play and screenplay for My Fair Lady. Lerner and Lowe did the music and words. My Fair Lady is based on Pygmalian. However,, Eliza didn’t end up with Henry in Pygmalion, she ended up with Freddie. I don’t think that was a good idea. Everyone wanted her to be with Henry. I heard that Cary Grant was offered the part of Henry Higgins instead of Rex Harrison who played him on Broadway. Reportedly Cary, said, “Not only will I not take the part, I won’t go see the movie either.” He wanted Rex to reprise his role. I don’t think I willl be going to see a remake. It’s like remaking Wizard of Oz, Sound of Music, Gone with the Wind, or any other classic movie it shouldn’t be done! Maybe it will make young people see the original, though.

I don’t see why they constantly remake movies…why not be original anymore and write a script based on a new idea? I LOVE the original and would NOT watch any remake of it.

-Tiff on March 29th, 2010

I think that Michael Caine would make a better Higgins than Hugh Grant. I wonder if they are going to stick to the script of the movie or the original musical in which she goes off with Freddy.

I agree with Emma’s statement. My Fair Lady is something you should NOT touch. It should be re-released, but not redone. I was sooo upset hearing about it. PLEASE. Stop wasting your time and money in remaking this once in a lifetime film. It’s iconic. It’s Legendary.

ARE YOU KIDDING? A BLONDE ELIZA? WHY DONT THEY GET SOMEONE BRUNETTE,YOUNG AND PRETTY LIKE KERA KNIGHTLY/1

-daces99 on April 24th, 2010

YES YES YES JULIE ANDREWS SHOULD REALLY REALLY PLAY MRS. HIGGINS! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! that would be a hoot and UBER EPIC AND PERFECTLY LOVERLY! !! !! but i don’t know how Carey Mulligan or Keira Knightley sings but Keira Khightley could be an ABSOLUTELY AMAZING Eliza Doolittle! I’m not sure how well Carey Mulligan can pull of that role even if she is a good singer. I liked An Educaction but her acting wasn’t as good as Keira’s acting has been over the years. When you compare the two Keira is 100x more versitile in acting skills and is amazing in whatever she does sooo… she should Eliza Doolittle. I mean when you go from a bounty hunter to Elizabeth Bennet and nail BOTH roles you’ve got to be given some credit, rite?!

The reason that MY FAIR LADY should be remade is that the Hepburn-Harrison film, while pretty to look at, sits on the screen like a soggy lump of coal. It’s claustropbhic, sodden, and stale throughout and Hepburn, who has such style and beautiful looks, George Cukor actually managed to make her look drawn and rather old-in-the-tooth. And poor Marni Mixon (dubbing for Audrey) doesn’t ever seem to get the accent right — I still hear a lot of Maria (West Side Story — Nixon dubbed that one for Natalie Wood) in NIxon’s Eliza. I perked up when I heard Emma Thompson was rewriting Shaw and Lerner (big query — will she return the end to the original Shaw ending).

Above all, JULIE ANDREWS, JULIE ANDREWS, JULIE ANDREWS, as Mrs. Higgins. If there ever would be triumphal casting, that would be it. If Gladys Cooper (love Gladys) can get an oscar nom as Mrs.HIggings, then Julie would be right there behind, and, if I was a Vegas better, all of my money would be on Andrews.

The reason to make a remake is that so many younger audience members will never see the original because it was done so long ago. However, a big splash doing it again would be great. I have just recently directed a version at a high school and cut it down to a little over 2 hours… it plays in La Crescenta California thru March 5th, 2011. I hope if they redo it… they cut it down… the Audrey Hepburn version is wonderful, but more then 3 hours plus long and today’s audiences won’t be happy with that. All the best…

You have hit the mark. It seems to me it is excellent thought. I agree with you.
