The last collection designed by Lee Alexander McQueen debuted during Paris Fashion Week today with a presentation that paid solemn tribute to the late designer. Mohawked models draped in each of the 16 looks slowly marched across a gilded salon—a perfect backdrop for the ornate, Byzantine-inspired collection. For Fall 2010, McQueen showcased his forward-thinking vision and technical mastery by weaving digitally captured works of art into his fabrics and transforming the most intricately embroidered brocade into a wearable pouf dress. The final words in the show’s notes summed the collection best: “Each piece was unique, as was he.”

In keeping with White House tradition, Michelle Obama donated her gorgeous Jason Wu inauguration gown to the Smithsonian National Museum of History today. Wu attended the ceremony and proudly watched as his beaded ivory, one-shoulder creation was inducted into a new gallery called “A First Lady’s Debut,” which showcases 11 dresses worn by first ladies.   “When I look at my gown—which I, in fact, have not seen since the day that I took it off—memories of that moment truly come rushing back,” Mrs. Obama said in her speech. “I remember how just luscious I felt as the President and I were announced onto the stage for the first of many dances.” The First Lady then turned to thank the designer. “This gown is a masterpiece. It is simple, it’s elegant, and it comes from this brilliant young mind,” continued Mrs. Obama.  “Today is about much more than this gown. It’s also about how, with enough focus and with enough determination, someone in this room could be the next Jason Wu.”

Lindsay Lohan No Longer Designing for Ungaro

Mar 9, 2010 @ 2:07 pm

Lindsay Lohan is making the rounds during Paris Fashion Week, taking in the Fall 2010 collections from designers including Kenzo, Viktor & Rolf and John Galliano. But there was one show where she was noticeably absent—Emanuel Ungaro. Just last year, La Lohan was named artistic director of the Paris-based fashion house. When asked why she did not attend Ungaro, Lohan responded, “Because I don’t work for them anymore,” reports WWD. Spanish-born Estrella Archs continues to be the chief designer for the house.

Mar 9, 2010 @ 12:36 pm

French singer/actress Vanessa Paradis (aka Johnny Depp’s longtime love) has been named the new face of Chanel Coco Cocoon, the brand’s line of  puffy quilted handbags, for Spring 2010. Chanel News reports that Karl Lagerfeld has been “won over by the well-rounded artist.” This is not the first collaboration between Lagerfeld and Paradis. In 1994, Paradis appeared in a birdcage for a Coco fragrance commercial. She is also currently fronting the Rouge Coco lip color collection. British rocker Lily Allen served as Coco Cocoon’s previous model.
